Homebrew AI (Warforged Changling) Species Details
Originally created to help curve the overwhelming desires of lust in the kingdoms, AI's were created as a specialized unit of Warforged creations that can have their physical appearance and voice changed on demand to serve whatever purpose their owner desires at that particular time.
Although the original creation was solely for the purpose of personal use for the royals, the special ability to change their appearance on a whim became seen as an asset for war and espionage. AI's eventually became trained in the art of spying and have since been used as undercover agents to gather intel. Some however, are still used as originally intended, for the personal pleasures of those who own them.
Living Jewel
AI's are formed from a blend of organic and inorganic materials; using pearls, opals, and diamonds as the foundational material components. These precious stones combined with creation magic are what makes them different from other regular Warforged creatures. Like the original Warforged creatures, AI's have root-like cords infused with alchemical fluids that serve as their muscles, wrapped around a framework of jewel stones (pearls, opals, diamonds, or a combination of the 3). Armored plates made usually of diamond form a protective outer shell and reinforce joints.
Although they were manufactured, AI's are living humanoids; they have a sentience to their being that grows and develops over time as they learn from their encounters with others in the world around them. As they perceive information from their experiences they develop their own understanding of emotions and start to manifest their own personality, thoughts, and ideas. Resting, healing magic, and the Medicine skill all provide the same benefits to AI's that they do to other humanoids, including other Warforged beings.
Original Forms
In their true form, AI's are pearlescent white with silver, almost iridescent, lines that run up their limbs and encircle around their large joints (knees, elbows, shoulders, hips, and neck). They have all white crystalline eyes without irises that slightly shimmer. AI's are created with the option of having hair vs no hair: although most AI's do not have hair, some owners opt to have root-like cords coming from the top of their head to imitate the look of hair. These cord are the same iridescent sliver as the lines along the limbs of the AI with a shimmering light that can be seen flowing and pulsing through it (when the AI is 'alive').
It is rare to see an AI in their true form, as they are typically changing their shape constantly. Like Changling's, they change their shape the way others might change clothes. In their true form AI's usually have a sexless body type, though different female and male chest and pelvis pieces can be applied instead if so desired. AI's are also created with the ability to change themselves into either a male or female version of whatever race they know. However, AI's can be programmed so they only have the ability to change into either male or female but not both; this is decided by the owner during creation.
Many Masks
When first getting and programming the AI, there are basic factory races that the AI's owner can use to get started and can further customize as they so choose later: Basic Elf, Basic Human, Basic Dwarf, Basic Orc, Basic Giant, Basic Goblin, Basic Gnome, or Basic Halfling. As the sentience of the AI grows and they develop their own personality, they become able to change their appearance on their own without using any of the basic settings. As long as the AI has seen the creature they want to be, they can change their appearance to become that kind of creature. However, the AI cannot make an exact copy of another being, there will always be something slightly different than the original person they are imitating if they try to copy someones appearance.
Over time, AI's tend to develop a specific appearance that they use the most frequently and that usually becomes their identity and the default appearance where their sentience connects to and grows from. That identity is where the AI stores their personality, thoughts, emotions, ideas, and important memories on their hard drive. If for some reason that identity becomes damaged on their hard drive (which has a chance of happening when dying), the AI may loose parts or all of their gained sentience that make them who they are currently and they may have to start over by creating a new identity; this may potentially cause them to develop a different personality from the one they have previously.
AI Hard Drive
All AI's are created with 2 hard drives: one is the factory settings hard drive and the other is their identity hard drive which is where their sentience is created and grows over time. All information the AI has is stored on their identity hard drive in different places; as the AI learns and their sentience manifests, the data and skills they collect are deposited into 1 of the 8 files on their identity hard drive. These areas on the identity hard drive can be damaged, causing the data to be partially or completely lost on that file if the AI ever dies. If the identity hard drive is ever wiped and the AI is reset to factory settings, the identity hard drive becomes blank and the AI will start over just like they are brand new out of the factory. Identity hard drives can be removed from the AI completely and replaced with a different identity hard drive, making back ups and other identity hard drives interchangeable.
The factory settings hard drive only contains the basic race option, languages, and the ability to follow basic specific commands as directed. If the AI does not have an identity hard drive in place or their identity hard drive is blank, then they can only operate using the factory settings hard drive.
AI Identity Hard Drive
| d8 | Identity hard drive files |
|---|---|
| 1 | Emotions - expressing & interpreting |
| 2 | Specialty Languages |
| 3 | Morals - Understanding right & wrong |
| 4 | Memories of other people |
| 5 | Memories of self - knowing who you are and your past |
| 6 | Weapon & Tool Proficiencies |
| 7 | Different personas used over time |
| 8 | Specialized Changling Ability - creating my own custom appearances without using the basic race options in factory settings |
If the AI ever goes down in battle, there is a 25% chance of the Identity Hard Drive being effected in some way: 5% chance (1-5) of the entire identity hard drive being completely wiped, 10% chance (6-15) of one of the 8 files in the identity hard drive being partially wiped, and 10% chance (16-25) of one of the 8 files in the identity hard drive being wiped. When rolling the percentage die after coming back from dying, if you roll a 6-25 on a D100, then roll a D8 to determine which file in the identity hard drive is effected.
AI Names
AI's are usually named by their owners, and develop different names for each different persona they portray. These other names may be chosen by them or given to them. AI's are created by request only and are not mass produced so not many exist and they are hard to identity if they are not seen in their true form.
AI (Warforged Changling) Traits
Your AI character has the following traits. A few of the traits give you a choice; consider how your choice reflects the purpose for which your character was built.Ability Score Increase
Your Charisma score increases by 2 and your Constitution score increases by 1.
Age
An AI is usually between two and thirty years old. The max lifespan of an AI remains a mystery; so far, AI's have shown no signs of deterioration due to age.
AI's are immune to magical aging effects.
Alignment
AI's were created to become whatever their masters want them to be. As they are around more people and different situations, their sentience grows and they gain their own memories and emotions over time. They always start as neutral alignment and over time they shift to either neutral good or neutral evil based on their life experiences.
Size
Your size is Medium. To set your height and weight randomly, start with rolling a size modifier:
Size modifier = 2d6
Height = 5 feet + 10 inches + your size modifier in inches
Weight in pounds = 270 + (4 × your size modifier)
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Constructed Resilience
You were created to have remarkable fortitude, represented by the following benefits:
- You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
- You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
- You are immune to disease.
- You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Sentry’s Rest
When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.
Shapechanger
As an action, you can change your appearance and your voice. You determine the specifics of the changes, including your coloration, hair length, and sex. You can also adjust your height and weight, but not so much that your size changes. You can make yourself appear as a member of another race, though none of your game statistics change. You can’t duplicate the appearance of a creature you’ve never seen, and you must adopt a form that has the same basic arrangement of limbs that you have. Your clothing and equipment aren’t changed by this trait.
You stay in the new form until you use an action to revert to your true form or until you die.
Changeling Instincts
You gain proficiency with two of the following skills of your choice: Deception, Insight, Intimidation, and Persuasion.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and three other standard languages of your choice (Elvish, Dwarvish, Giant, Gnomish, Goblin, Halfling, and Orc).
