Homebrew Corvan Species Details

A short, baby-faced child wanders through the streets of the city. They smile gleefully at the fountains filled with shimmering coins, the towering buildings above, the shops filled with knick-knacks and tchotchkes. Despite their appearance, they aren't a that young. As their form morphs into one of a small black bird, they reveal themselves to be a Corvan, one of the immortal shapeshifting children of the forest.

Childlike Wonder

Corvans are delighted by what many other races would consider mundane-- shards of stained glass, perfectly hand-shaped rocks, or vibrant magical effects. Corvans will often carry bags in which they keep a variety of bemusing trinkets that other adventurers might think were useless.

Connection with Crows

The similarities between Corvans and their corvid counterparts go beyond just name and aesthetics. Long ago, crows and ravens learned how to identify Corvans differently from children of other races, and the gleeful temperament of Corvans makes them welcome visitors in bird's territories. Corvans will often trade trinkets and nest materials with all manner of avians, and kinder birds have even been known to warn their parties of incoming danger.

Migrating Minors

Corvans are born to the wilds, typically raised by nearby villages as orphans to be cared for by the community. While this is suitable for Corvans below a certain age, most choose to fly the coop and experience the wonders of the world by the time they reach 15. Some Corvans will travel forests, making friends with plants and wildlife. Some choose to move between cities, collecting what they consider to be rare and exotic trinkets for their collection. Others simply follow the migration patterns of birds the best they can, traveling as a magpie from above and switching to foot travel to visit interesting locations they spot.

Corvan Names

Corvans are usually named after animals, plants, and natural objects, with a preference towards short nicknames. They don't typically have family names, and most don't bother with a surname at all. If pressed on a last name, they usually name the town or community they grew up in.
