Homebrew Tortle (Kaeros) Species Details

The Tortle of Kaeros are a little more aquatic than your typical Tortle.  They have long, flat hands and feet that allow them to swim easily and their serrated beaks are perfect for catching food or taking a bite of someone foolish enough to get dangerously close.  Tortles are one of the many animals brought to sentience and humanoid form by Xarea.  They live mostly in coastal regions, near large rivers, or on the islands.  Tortles of Kaeros live much longer lives than those of most realms.

Tortle (Kaeros) Traits

Tortles have the following traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 2.

Age

Baby Tortles crawl for about a month after birth before learning to walk on their legs. They reach adulthood by the age of 23 and live an average of 250 years.

Alignment

Tortles have an inclination toward neutrality in all aspects, tending to prefer living in small tribes and avoiding any kind of city life.

Size

Tortle adults stand 6 to 7 feet tall and average 600 pounds. Their shells account for roughly one-third of their weight. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet

Waterborn

The Tortles of Kaeros are naturally adept at swimming and have a Swim Speed of 30. Though Tortles can't breathe underwater, as long as they are only doing light activity they can easily hold their breath for 1 hour before it becomes a struggle.

Languages

You know how to read, write and speak Aquan and Common.

Natural Armor

Due to your shell and the shape of your body, you are ill-suited to wearing armor. Your shell provides ample protection, however. Your AC is 14 + your Constitution modifier (your Dexterity modifier doesn't affect this number). You gain no benefit from wearing armor, but if you are using a shield, you can apply the shield's bonus as normal..

Shell Defense

You can withdraw into your shell as a bonus action, but you drop any held items when you do so. Until you emerge, you gain a +4 bonus to AC, and you have advantage on Strength and Constitution saving throws. While in your shell, you are prone, your speed is 0 and can't increase, you have disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws and are considered blind, you can't take reactions, and the only action you can take is a bonus action to emerge from your shell.

Strong Survival Instinct.

You have Proficiency in the Survival and Athletics skills.

Hybrid Nature

You are considered both Humanoid and Beast. Any effect that would affect either can affect you.

Innate Magic

You know the Spare The Dying cantrip. At 3rd level, you gain access to the Sanctuary spell and can cast it once with this trait without expending a spell slot. At 5th level, you gain access to the Alter Self spell and can cast it once with this trait without expending a spell slot. Once you finish a short or long rest you may cast these spells again. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Bite

Your serrated beak is a Natural weapon, which you can use to make Unarmed Strikes. If you hit with it, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d8 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
