Homebrew Amalgamate Species Details

Artwork by @Shamagim

The amalgamate people are bizarre shambles of chitin, flesh, and limbs. They are a rare and unwelcome sight amongst general civilization. Their cannibalistic tendencies and abominable appearance can unsettle the soundest minds, and reasonable people are terrified by their reproductive cycle.

Amalgamate Traits

You Amalgamate's limbs and cannibalistic tendencies manifest in the following traits

Ability Score Increase

When determining your ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. An Amalgamate generally has a Constitution that is unlike others, and their weird bodies hide a preternatural Strength. Alternatively, the “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow these suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the charac

Creature Type

Every creature in D&D, including each player character, has a special tag in the rule that identifies the type of creature they are. You are humanoid, despite your appearance.

Life Span

Assuming the character doesn’t meet a violent end on an adventure, you can live around a century.

Size

You are Medium or Small. You choose the size when you select this race. Amalgamates vary drastically in height and weight.

Speed

Your walking speed is 30 feet.

Consumable Appendage

You have special appendages that you can regrow and cannibalize. You can have a maximum number of consumable appendages equal to your maximum number of Hit Dice.

Consumable appendages have a reach of 5 feet, and can lift a number of pounds equal to your Strength score. You can use any one of them to interact with objects; grapple or shove creatures; or make unarmed strikes. As a bonus action, you can [Tooltip Not Found] with one of your appendages.

Your appendages can’t wield weapons or shields; perform somatic or grasp material spell components; use tools or magic items; or do anything that requires manual precision.

Recover Appendage

As an action, you can consume part of the corpse of a humanoid to grow another Consumable Appendage, up to your maximum. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Cannibalize Extremity

As an action, you can consume part of the corpse of a humanoid and spend one Hit Die to heal yourself. Roll the die, add your Constitution modifier, and regain a number of hit points equal to the total (minimum of 1).

Instead of eating part of a corpse, you can choose to cannibalize one of the appendages from your Consumable Appendage trait to heal the maximum amount, instead of rolling.

Biological Weapons

You have any number of jaws that you can use to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with them, the strike deals slashing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

When you reach 3rd level, you gain another biological weapon based on one of the following options (choose when you select this race):

Lash: You have any number of lashing appendages that you can use to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with them, the strike deals slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike. Your reach for it is 5 feet greater than normal.

Lick: You have any number of tongues that you can use to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with them, the strike deals acid damage equal to 1d4 + your Constitution modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Tentacle: You have any number of tentacles that you can sue to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with them, the strike deals bludgeoning damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike. Immediately after hitting, you can try to grapple the target as a bonus action.

Venom: Your jaws have venom glands. When you hit with your jaws, the strike deals poison damage equal to your proficiency bonus in addition to the slashing damage normal for unarmed strikes made using your jaws.
