Homebrew Dracotaur Species Details

Her father stood on the first of the three stairs that led down from the portal, unmoving. The scales of his face had grown paler around the edges, but Clanless Mehen still looked as if he could wrestle down a dire bear himself. His familiar well-worn armor was gone, replaced by violet-tinted scale armor with bright silvery tracings. There was a blazon on his arm as well, the mark of some foreign house. The sword at his back was the same, though, the one he had carried since even before he had found the twins left in swaddling at the gates of Arush Vayem.

For all her life, Farideh had known that reading her father’s face was a skill she’d been fortunate to learn. A human who couldn’t spot the shift of her eyes or Havilar’s would certainly see only the indifference of a dragon in Clanless Mehen’s face. But the shift of scales, the arch of a ridge, the set of his eyes, the gape of his teeth—her father’s face spoke volumes.

But every scale of it, this time, seemed completely still—the indifference of a dragon, even to Farideh.

Being transformed into a dracotaur is the greatest reward for the loyalty and service to a dragon flight that a dragonborn can have.

Sometimes this is given as a blessing, voluntarily from a powerful dragon. Other times, the continuous contact with draconic energies for generations can have a dracotaur being born from dragonborn parents.

Draconic transformation

Exactly how the dracotaurs came into being is a guarded secret of the flights. Though they have dragon-like qualities, these creatures are not descended from dragons. Instead, they are distant kinfolk, descended from humanoids and dragonborn.

From the waist up, dracotaurs are similar to other dragonborn but below the waist their bodies look like the one of a dragon on four legs and without wings. their bodies end on a long draconic tail sometimes with fins or spikes on top of it.

Culture

Dracotaurs are the elite force of the flights, acting as specialized soldiers and protectors, though some of them carry some more menial tasks. In general, their society is limited in scope and most of them serve their dragons with almost fanatical reverence. In the past any kind of perceived rebellion or resistance to their masters from any member was seen as treason and punished by death. Nowadays dracotaur clans are more open to different ideas but remain resolute and loyal to their dragon masters.

With a more open society, some of the younger members have decided to put the fanatism aside and go out to see the rest of the world, feeling an urge to learn more about it. However, most of them eventually make their way back to their clans where they serve for the rest of their lives , the feeling of needing to get back to the clan is known as "the call".

Behavior

Though the draconic blood can severily influence the dracotaur personality, the waning of dragon power on them have allowed divergence from the most common dragon flight traits. Because of that, even the most reviled dragon flight can have dracotaur that do not reflect the worst personality traits.

However, most can expect a sense of superiority from most dracotaur as for most of their lives, their families have instilled a sense of pride of being a dracotaur, believing to be better than the rest of the humanoid or mortal races.
