Homebrew Axolotl Species Details
Originally from the Elemental Plane of Water, very few Axolotl ever travel to the Material Plane. Those Axolotl that do tend to do so for varying reasons of their own.
Axolotl have webbed hands and feet, 6 large external gills on the necks, lidless black eyes, and coloration that favors pale pinks, greens, and browns.
Creating Your Character
Ability Score Increases
When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.
Languages
Your Axolotl can speak Common and Primordial.
Creature Type
An Axolotl is considered Humanoid.
Life Span
A typical Axolotl can live around 150 years due to their exceptional regenerative abilities.
Height and Weight
Axolotl tend to be two and a half to three and a half feet tall. They're lean and light, but have powerful muscles.

Axolotl Traits
As an Axolotl, you have the following racial traits.Slimy Skin
As a primarily aquatic creature, your skin constantly secretes a slime that helps you swim faster. A secondary effect is making it difficult to be grabbed (grappled) by other creatures. You also must intake more water than normal while on the surface for extended periods of time.
Creature Type
You are a Humanoid.
Size
You are Small.
Speed
Your walking speed is 25 feet, and your swimming speed is 35 ft.
Amphibious
You can breathe air and water.
Axolotl Regeneration
Axolotl give the impression of a huggable, lovable little larva that needs protection. But in truth, their incredible regeneration makes them quite hardy.
Once per Long Rest, you can use a Bonus Action to boost your natural regeneration. You regain 1 HP every 3 seconds for 60 seconds. (If used in combat, you regain 2 HP at the start of each of your turns.)
If you lose a digit, you grow a new one in 1d4 days. If you lose a limb, you grow a new one in 1d6+4 days.
Control Air and Water
You can cast fog cloud with this trait. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the gust of wind spell with this trait. Starting at 5th level, you can also cast the water walk spell with it. Once you cast any of these spells with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast these spells using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level.
Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).
Darkvision
You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.
Emissary of the Sea
You can communicate simple ideas to any Beast, Elemental, or Monstrosity that has a swimming speed. It can understand your words, though you have no special ability to understand it in return.

Posted May 9, 2023This is my favorite axolotl build so far! My DM for this character also likes it compared to the others I sent for his review. We just want to add water dependency.
