Homebrew Adolescent Treant Species Details

While most Treants are content to remain as protectors of the forests they were born within, Adolescent Treants are as curious about the world as many of the young of other races are. Before they mature into fully grown examples of their race, these Treants may sometimes be found venturing away from their homes to establish new forests, combat threats to the natural world or in pursuits of knowledge about the wider world.

Adolescent Treants are easy to distinguish from their mature relations, being more humanoid in appearance although their appearance can vary dramatically depending upon the species of tree they descend from. They could be tall and willowy with leaves that flow from their heads to their feet, or perhaps broad with dark, rough bark with shocks of pine needles adorning their bodies. Treants may identify as female, male, both or neither and they may bear characteristics typical of humanoids of these genders. It is also not uncommon that they will present as a different gender as they grow into full maturity.

Though Treants may wander from the forest they were born in, they remain deeply in tune to it and are aware that in time, they will need to put down roots. When this time comes, the Adolescent Treant puts down it's roots and falls into "the long sleep", where it slumbers for a century, dreaming of it's youth as it grows into it's mature state.

Adolescent Treant Traits

Adolescent Treants benefit from the following features:

Ability Score Increase

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character.

Creature Type

You are a Plant

Life Span

Adolescent Treants remain adolescents until about a century. After this time they are compelled by their nature to put down roots and begin a long slumber of a further century, during which they slowly grow into mature Treants. An Adolescent Treant who is aged to older than a century through magical means will immediately begin it's long slumber where they stand.

Size

You are Medium.

Treant Magic

You know the Shillelagh cantrip. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the Speak with Animals spell with this trait. Starting at 5th level, you can also cast the Speak with Plants spell with this trait. Once you cast Speak with Animals or Speak with Plants with this trait, you can't cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast either of those spells using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Natural Armour

Due to the shape of your body you are unable to wear armour, your wooden body provides you ample protection, however; it gives you a base AC of 13 + your Constitution Modifier (your Dexterity modifier doesn't affect this number). You gain no benefit from wearing armor, but if you are using a shield, you can apply the shield's bonus as normal.

Deep Roots

When you make a strength check or strength saving throw you can use your reaction to spread your roots and use your body's sturdiness to your advantage.
Until the end of your next turn, you have advantage on all strength checks and strength saving throws (including the triggering roll), but your movement speed becomes 0.
You must be on a surface or liquid which can support your weight in order to use this feature.
