Homebrew Animated Armor Species Details
Animated armors are were once inanimate suits of armor that were later enchanted and brought to apparent life by an enchanter. Animated armors are to serve a purpose, usually defending their creator at any given time, although they can be of service in other aspects. When their useful life reaches its end, animated armors are either freed from their duties or dismissed; this causes them to either become inert once more or be let loose upon the world. If left to its own devices, animated armors will, in most cases, remain inert until approached by another being who can command them and give them a new purpose. Others will simply walk aimlessly, trying to find a meaning for their lonely existence.
Although seemingly formed by mere pieces of protective material, the real essence of an animated suit of armor lies within. Their structure is held together by magical energy, which is what gives the armor sentience and the ability to interact with its surroundings. So, it could be argued that the armor is just a façade hiding their true sentient essence inside. This is what makes animated armors able to transfer their sentience into a different suit of armor, making it come magically to life.
Animated armors are created from inanimate objects. For this reason, their size and appearance vary depending on the creator and intended design. Some are incredibly ornate, while others are plane and simple. Their size ranges from 5 to 7 feet and their girth is variable.

Animated Armor Traits
Animated armors are effective at their job, whether they follow a task or act by instinct.Ability Score Increase
Your Constitution score increases by 2. Also, depending on your subrace, another Ability Score will increase.
Age
An animated armor may be months or centuries old. The maximum lifespan of an animated suit of armor is still unknown.
Creature Type
You are a Construct. Still, you are able to be healed with healing magic and potions, as your essence absorbs the arcane power of spells and potions to repair your exterior. In addition, Wisdom (Medicine) checks can be made to stabilize you.
Size
Your size is Medium, and can be between 5 to 7 feet tall.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
False Appearance
While remaining motionless, you are indistinguishable from a normal suit of armor.
Living Steel
Your construct existence is a sign of fortitude. You gain extra benefits:
- You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
- You are immune to disease.
- You gain proficiency with Light Armor, and can only inhabit armor with which you are proficient. When your essence is created, you are given a suit of armor to inhabit: if your class does not grant you any armor as part of your starting equipment, you inhabit a leather suit of armor (AC = 11 + Dex modifier); if your class grants you some other type of armor with which you are proficient (e.g. clerics are proficient with medium armor and are given scale mail as part of their starting equipment), you can inhabit that armor instead.
- While living, you cannot be separated from the armor surrounding your essence by any means. Only when you die, the suit scatters to the ground as an inanimate object.
Essence Transference
You are able to leave your current carcass in order to inhabit a new one. Over the course of a short or long rest, you can perform a 1 hour ritual to possess a new suit of armor. You must remain within 5 feet of the new armor during this process, or the ritual fails. If the new suit of armor requires attunement, you immediately attune to it at the end of the ritual. You gain different benefits depending on the type of armor you inhabit.
- While inhabiting a suit of Light Armor you are swift and dexterous: your Dexterity score increases by 1; you gain proficiency in Dexterity (Stealth) checks and Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks; your base movement speed increases by 5.
- While inhabiting a suit of Medium Armor you are deadlier in battle: either your Dexterity score or your Strength score increases by 1; you can make a single melee weapon attack as a bonus action if you have previously taken the Attack action; your melee attack range increases by 5 feet.
- While inhabiting a suit of Heavy Armor you use your weight to your advantage: your Strength score increases by 1; you gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class; once per turn, you deal an extra 1d6 force damage to one creature you hit with a melee attack.
To change this feature you must do it through the Character Builder.
