Homebrew Animated Scarecrow Species Details
“Pierce was built by design, while you were built by accident,” Lakashtai said. “The soul is what matters, not the shape of the vessel.”
“What makes you think he has a soul?” Gerrion said.
“What makes you think you do?”

Animated Scarecrow Traits
Your Scarecrow has the following traits.Ability Score Increase
Your Dexterity score increases by 1, and one other ability score of your choice increases by 2.
Age
As an animated bundle of straw, it's hard to say how long your lifespan will be. In theory, you could live a very long time until your body molds and rots - or you could be gone in an instant by walking too close to a candle.
Alignment
Your life is fleeting, and most scarecrows aren't alive by choice. Nobody would fault you for tending toward chaos and neutrality, or even evil. If this body is a curse, though, and you seek to repent or make amends, you may choose to take a different path.
Size
Your size is Medium. To set your height and weight randomly, start with rolling a size modifier:
Size modifier = 2d6
Height = 5 feet + 10 inches + your size modifier in inches
Weight in pounds = 270 + (4 × your size modifier)
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Body of Straw
You were created to have remarkable fortitude, represented by the following benefits:
- You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
- You are vulnerable to fire damage,
- You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
- You are immune to disease.
- You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Sentry’s Rest
When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.
Natural Camouflage
As an action, you can use the strange nature of your body to your advantage when attempting to hide. There are two ways you can do so:
Blend in
You attempt to camouflage yourself into your surroundings. While blending in you may attempt to hide from a creature or person that would otherwise have direct lines of sight on you (excluding truesight or tremmorsense). You can make attacks and cast spells as normal and your speed is reduced to 5'
Deflate
You can deflate your body and collapse to the ground, superficially appearing to be a pile of rags, twigs, or scraps of wood. While fully disassembled, you cannot attack, cast spells, or move yourself via physical means. You gain advantage on all Dexterity (Stealth) checks, plus your proficiency. Your speed is reduced to 0.'
You can choose either at will but any use of this feature counts as an Action (e.g.: switching from blending-in to fully-deflated will require you to use your Action, as would re-corporealizing from a pile of scraps) .
Specialized Design
You gain one skill proficiency and one tool proficiency of your choice.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.
