Homebrew Canaanite Species Details

The Canaanites are known to outsiders by their more common name: the dog men. These doggy beast folk live in small societies at the edges of the world, to which they develop an almost co-dependent devotion to. Canaanites who left their homes to become adventurers have been famed for fanatical loyalty to their friends (or masters) as well as their ferocity in combat. While usually aligned to the good powers of the world and quite friendly, abused and betrayed Canaanites can become horrifically evil, or even be led into cult like fanaticism when their loyal tendencies go astray.

Canaanites are such a rare sight in much of the world that they are usually looked upon as an exotic fascination, mistaken for werewolves, or are accepted for their resemblance to family pets. However, the Canaanites do have testy relationships with the Tabaxi, who have a long history of running afoul of the Canaanite's culture of earnestness.

This falls far short of the antagonism Canaanites hold towards gnolls as a rule, however. The Canaanites view gnolls as directly opposed to their own love of life and community for their connection to the undead, and their form is seen as an especial perversion of the beauty of the dog men. They are not good boys and girls.

Canaanite Traits

Known for fierce devotion, the dog men usually fall into roles that seek to improve the world around them with their strength and the wisdom of the world's edge.

Keen Senses

Their survival on the edges of the world have imparted keen senses of hearing and smell upon the Canaanite race.

Claw and Fang

You may use your fangs or claws as natural weapons when using the attack action. The damage dice for this is 1d6 + your strength modifier.

Ceremony for the Fallen

Canaanite culture imparts on each Canaanite a ritual for speaking with the dead by means of a ceremony that involves laying beside the dead and "sharing the life force with them." This is done via a dance of offering that involves laying beside the dead (or in the case of especially honored dead, upon them) and wriggling vigorously.

In this way, a Canaanite character can cast Speak with Dead as a ritual.
