Homebrew Cinderfolk Species Details
(This Lineage was made for the Humblewood campaign setting.)
Death in the Scorched Grove is not always permanent. The Cinderfolk are intelligent, fire-based undead that originate from the Scorched Grove. It is theorized that the strange magic in the area forces some souls to reinhabit their bodies, imbuing them with the very fire that took their lives.
Calamity-Born
Cinderfolk came into being in the aftermath of a massive forest fire known as "The Great Calamity" 300 years ago. The first of them being a Cervan lich named Rayzl Xannadeer, now a lesser Amaranthine known as the Cinder Queen. In stories, it is said that she tried to take advantage of the tainted magic that had become unbound from the Great Rhythm in the grove at the time of the fire.
A Strange Visage
The Cinderfolk live a strange half-life in which their souls are bound to their bodies, with their fur or feathers becoming grey like the ashes they were buried in and their eyes like the fires they were consumed by. Cinderfolk who exist alongside living folk have taken to adorning themselves in bright clothing and jewelry to make themselves more approachable and friendly, though the degree of effectiveness varies.
A Slate Wiped Clean
When a Cinderfolk first wakes, they have no memory of their past life. Over time one may regain some fragments of places and people, such as a warm or sad feeling around either, but just as many do not. While many Cinderfolk take advantage of this blank state and explore Everden, others are happy to settle with small clusters of other Cinderfolk and alongside their living counterparts.
