Homebrew Avaryn Species Details
Native to the lofty tree cities on the island of Dol, avaryn are often venerated as wise mages and sages. They are a very family oriented race, often quite obstinate when it comes to their traditions. Avaryn who leave home for an a conflicting purpose or call or often shunned from their tribe. Many avaryn live nomadic lives, gathering with others of their kind across Erothil if they are lucky enough to find them.
On Feathered Wings
Avaryn are humanoid birds, covered entirely in feathers, with the exception of their feet and beaks. Avaryn plumage ranges in practically all colors, primarily white, gray, and purple. These bird folk sport wide, heavy wings, which not only allow the avaryn to fly, but give them protection from the elements. At the ends of their wings are similarly feathered digits that allow them to hold and grab things as other types of humanoid creature would.
Many avaryn pride themselves on their feathers. The color of an avaryn's plume represents a different bird species and/or clan they originate from. Feathers are often well-groomed and shiny as well as occasionally adorned in fine jewelry.
The avaryn of the wild tend to stick to the skies whenever they can, while those who have adapted to city lifestyles keep a low profile by remaining mostly on their feet.
Natural Daggers
Like most large birds, avaryn have a built in defense and attack mechanism in the form of talons. These sharp claws can pierce skin and cloth to deal damage to anyone that might be a danger or threaten an avaryn clan.
Avaryn beaks are not only used for communication and calls, but as a tool for digging in soft ground and wood. This skill is used in the wilds of Dol, where most avaryn live.
Nest Cities
Avaryn are native to the island of Dol, off the coast of Ty'vanon. The island houses many avaryn cities, which are nestled high aloft in Dol gum trees, one of the highest growing trees in Erothil. Not only do the clans remain safe from any enemies on the ground, but the avaryn are able to use their beaks to access the tree gum to eat it and use it as a natural adhesive.
Avaryn Names
Avaryn names tend to mimic the sounds of their indigenous language (also known as Avaryn). This includes such sounds as harsh 'K' and 'T' consonants and often long 'O' sounds. Such avaryn names include: Enok, Krail, Aka, Rakka, Rak, Ookana, Oorkesh, Rook, Quarek, and Ero. These names are often used interchangeably as either a surname or first name for avaryn.
AVARYN BACKGROUNDS
Backgrounds that are most appropriate for avaryn include the noble, the outlander, and the sage.
The avaryn primarily remain with their families in large groups in Dol. Those that stray away from their tribe often do so to study life outside of the avaryn ways, such as the lifestyles of mages, scholars, investigators, and sometimes soldiers.

Age
Avaryn reach maturity at the age of 10. With a lifespan comparable to humans, avaryn usually live until 70 years old.
Alignment
Avaryn, most often, are loyal to a fault. They hold laws, principles, and tradition in high regard and although they may vary in terms of the good vs. evil axis, the avaryn will primarily abide strictly by their beliefs. Rebellious avaryn may display different alignments than their family/clan.
Size
Avaryn range anywhere from 4-6 feet tall. Their bodies are light but durable, in order to facilitate flight as well as combat. Avaryn usually weigh from 60 and 120 pounds. Your size is Medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 25 feet.
Flight
You have a flying speed of 50 feet. To use this speed, you can’t be wearing medium or heavy armor.
Talons
Your talons are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Beak Digger
Your beak is a natural shovel that you can use to dig up food and nutrients from organic material like dirt, wood, and even creatures who are either willing or dead. You have advantage on any skill check involving burying or digging. You are unable to use your beak to dig through inorganic material such as metal, stone, or crystal.
