Homebrew Awakened Toy Species Details
Small Body, Big Heart
Often the product of fledgling enchanters or the byproducts of magically inclined children, Awakened Toys are known to be terrific companions. They can usually be found seeking to spread happiness and comfort to those that keep them, and are extremely loyal to the family they've been gifted.
While some exceptions do exist, an Awakened Toy can be a source of calm in times that would typically prove otherwise.
The Life of a Toy
Awakened Toys can live for a pretty much indefinite amount of time, so long as they receive replacement stuffing or parts when worn down. They often live with their companions to the very end of their lives, eventually being passed down to their descendants to repeat the process once again.
They typically enjoy a cozy existence and don't often become adventurers. However, if mistreated, it's possible they may seek an alternate place to live, or if their companions are abducted, they may seek to bring their friends home. There have also been a few instances where toys have been specially created as adventurers' companions.
Subrace
You're awakened toy can be anything you can imagine. Typically, awakened toys fall into one of several categories, which you can choose from below.
Awakened Toy Traits
Your awakened toy has a number common traits that is shares with other awakened toys.Ability Score Increase
Your Charisma score increases by 2.
Age
An awakened toy has no natural lifespan and can live for as long as there is magic to fuel its existence. This also means that, without regular repairs, a toy could eventually remain sentient, even while torn to pieces and left alone.
Size
Awakened toys average between 1 1/2 to 3 feet tall and weigh roughly 2 to 10 pounds. Your size is Small.
(DM Note: If your game allows it, the Awakened Toy can be Tiny in size. This comes with the ability to occupy the space of another creature.)
Speed
Your base walking speed is 25 feet.
Darkvision
Awakened toys are accustomed to the darkness of a small home or building. You can see in dim light within 30 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Inconspicuous
While motionless you appear as a normal toy. A creature that suspects you are more can make a DC15 Arcana check to discern that you are an awakened toy.
Magical Essence
You have resistance to poison damage and immunity to disease, and you have advantage on saving throws against being paralyzed or poisoned. You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe. However, if you enter an anti-magic field, or are targeted by a Dispel Magic of 5th level or higher, you must make a DC15 Constitution saving throw, or gain a level of exhaustion as your magic struggles to maintain itself.
Additionally, when you take a long rest, you must spend at least four hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal while your magic essence is recharged.
If this time is spent being cuddled by another creature, your magic is bolstered and you require only two hours, instead of four.
(DM Note. The homebrew spell mentioned above is "Moontail's Mega Mending" and is located here on DNDBeyond. Adding it to your collection will cause the tooltip above to function properly.)
Magical Repairs
If the Mending or [Tooltip Not Found] spell is cast on you, you can expend a Hit Die, roll it, and regain a number of hit points equal to the roll plus your Constitution modifier (minimum of 1 hit point).
(DM Note: In addition, if your campaign allows it, an awakened toy can also benefit from common spells that preserve life but that normally don’t affect Constructs: cure wounds, healing word, and spare the dying. However, the homebrew spell listed above is a good alternative to this rule.)
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and another language of your choice. This second language is typically the same as your creator but is not restricted to it. Awakened Toys, unique as they are, don't have a rich and collective history. As such, whenever one toy meets another, the two can often spend hours recounting their own tales and memories with each other.
