Homebrew Basidian Species Details

Gifted with the form of sentient life from Fey magic, Basidians are just happy to be there. Coming in many different variants among "Psilocybe", "Puffball", "Amanita", and "Agaric", each Basidian shines its uniqueness in its own way. While Basidian appearances vary wildly, general looks are discussed in the variants sections.

Basidian Traits

Born from the magic of Fey, Basidians are easily recognizable from their pale bodies and large caps. They love to bask in dark and warm places, this would lead you to believe they are warm to the touch but they are actually quite cold.

Age

It is largely unknown when a Basidian reaches maturity, it is also largely unknown how long a Basidian lives before they fully die. After about five years a Basidian will go through a budding process in which they leave their main larger body and regenerate to a smaller growing one. Similar to how a crustacean molts, the Basidian will be more vulnerable for the first day or two until they settle into their smaller stature to grow and take in sustenance.

Size

For the first 3 years of growth after budding, Basidians will be small creatures and grow from about 2 feet tall to 4 feet tall. For the rest of the budding cycle, Basidians are medium creatures and can grow close to 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium or Small based on your budding cycle.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 25 feet.

Darkvision

Born in the dark depths of the underground, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Trance

Basidians don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.

Languages

Your character can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character. The Player’s Handbook offers a list of languages to choose from. The DM is free to modify that list for a campaign.

Versatile Fruit Bodies

You gain proficiency in either Medicine, Nature, or Persuasion.

Toxic Spores

Readily needing to protect themselves, the Basidians developed the defense mechanism of spraying toxic spores out of their bodies. You gain access to the Poison Spray cantrip at the 1st level, the Stinking Cloud spell at the 6th level, and the Circle of Death Spell at the 11th level.
