Homebrew Xotel Species Details
Xotels are a tribal people that live in the Feywild. They make there homes in deep pools of murky water that they use to hide them selves form treats that harm them or Fey that would find pleasure in toying with them. Most Xotels keep to their quiet, secluded homes in the water; but the ones that do venture out of their pool-bound homes, find the wider world to be alien and fascinating beyond comprehension.
Pools Aplenty
The forests of the Feywild are home to innumerable swamps and bogs that the Xotel make their homes within, hiding deep under a layer of murky, muddy water that hides their homes from prying eyes and unwanted guests; However most guest are wanted, as new creature and new sights fascinate them. They construct large, pod-like homes out of the fronds and leaves of the sprawling forests that surround they swamps and adorn them with bio-luminescent bulbs they call Glob-Bulbs to illuminate they homes.
Much of their lives are spent tending to schools of swamp fish that they cultivate for food, expanding their homes as their population grows, and praying and hoping that one day their long lost god would finally return to them. Most Xotels are content to live like this for their whole lives, but on occasion, often prompted because a bit of the outside world comes to them, a Xotel will yearn to to leave the pools and venture beyond, out into the world to see what is out there.
Ao'til'xotel
If you asked a Xotel how their race began, they would tell you that their god, Ao'til'xotel, formed them from the slime and mud of the many swamps and pools that can be found in the Feywild. After their creation, Ao'til'xotel was able to spend scant little time with the Xotel people before something took them away, leaving the Xotel to fend for themselves in their new lonely home. To this day the Xotel venerate their creator as a god, dedicating many disciples and shamans to them in hopes that one day Ao'til'xotel will find their way back to the Xotel people and would return to dwell with their long lost creations once again.
Unwavering Smiles
The Xotel people tend to be as kind as possible when outsiders come to visit them in and around they watery homes; After all, if they don't show any aggression, there visitors should have no reason to either. This practice, however well intentioned, has usually gotten them in more trouble than it has gotten them out of. Many of the creature that would come calling on the Xotel in their underwater homes would not go through the trouble of doing so without a good reason to begin with.
The chief offender and abuser of this Xotel curtesy are the Bullywugs. The Xotel have lived through one to many disagreements with the the Bullywugs of the Feywild, causing the Xotel to have countless members of their tribes killed or kidnapped over the generations. The Xotel have subsequently ceased to show hospitality to any green creatures. This new practice has caused many a unfortunate traveler wearing green to be unnecessarily attacked on sight when venturing too close to the home of the Xotel.
