Homebrew Ala-Albain Species Details

Personality

Ala-albain tend to be calm, cool and collected, assessing every situation before taking rash action. They are happiest when flying and viewing the skies of Maela. Closed-roof buildings and underground places usually make them claustrophobic and panicky.

Physical Description

Most ala-albain look like lanky humans standing 6 to 9 feet tall with their most prominent muscles located on the shoulders and back. From their shoulder blades extend large wings, white and feathery for al'alas or brown and leathery for alarims. Their complexion ranges from very pale to dark brown for both subraces, depending on where they make their homes.

Relations

Ala-albain keep mostly to themselves, secluded in tall mountain spires around Meala. Their ability to live at high altitudes has allowed them to ensure this seclusion. Trade, if it occurs, takes place at the base of their mountain homes, since most are loath to let any but other of their race into their communities. Occasionally, interaction does occur. Most land-dwelling peoples have a difficult time making the long hikes up to the mountain homes

Alarims are friendlier and more empathetic towards guests and visitors than al'alas. Even so, many years of being revered by earthly races have given them a high and mighty outlook. Alarims are more popular than the feathered Al'alas, who have found persecution at the hands of many land dwellers. Many al'alas see the other races of Maela as lesser often referring to them as "land crawlers" or "crawlers" taking issue with others' inability to fly. The two subraces live together harmoniously only ever disagreeing an treatment of foreigners.

Alignment

Alarims are typically lawful and/or good manifesting in the general good treatment of others, either as customs require or their good nature precludes. Al'alas are typically lawful and/or evil tending to manipulate and look down on all others and holding to customs that place them higher on the social hierarchy than others. Both tend to respect tradition and hierarchy. A individuals outlook typically reflects the treatment they receive from land dwelling races. This leads Alarims to tend toward open mindedness and kindness and Al'alas to tend toward isolation and suspicion.

 Lands

The lands of the Ala-alabin are limited to the mountain tops of Maela. The Great Northern Mountains and Vathamon Mountains host the larges population of ala-albain towers and communities. Guards constantly monitor from the spire-towers on watch for the variety of dangers the skies hold (including bad weather, dragons, and roc) and visitors approaching from the mountain paths below.

Religion

Many devote themselves to gods of the skies and weather or protection. The god-twins of the winds, Schaes and Dolre, are particularly popular. Al'alas are rare to worship gods that hold great respect by land dwelling races. Gods of the earth and dwarven pantheon are shunned by ala-albains.

Language

Their native tounge Hralan is melodic and often referred to has beautiful by humans and elves.

Names

Ala-albains often have two names. One is in Hralan and is often completely unpronounceable to other races. Their second name is a nickname they give to themselves in common which they give to other races to use. These nicknames are often aspirational descriptors such as Swift Wing or Wise Wind.

Adventure

Ala-albains seen adventuring are often youth in search of new experiences. Due to their alignment and attitude alarims are more likely to leave on an adventure.
