Homebrew Cave Bear (Awakened Variant) "The Roused" Species Details
The offspring of a unique and wholly unexpected byproduct resulting from an encounter between an awakened cave bear and forces of elemental chaos, these young bears were born as something entirely different and new. More than just awakened, these offspring possessed the intelligence, capacity for reason, desire to learn, and ability to grow that carried them beyond the simple, albeit awakened animals they sprang from.
These bears, called "The Roused" by druids and rangers who have interacted with them, are restless from birth. Though their mother is intelligent, they feel a pull for something greater and do not settle for the life of a wild bear. Often these restless souls make their way into remote, wilderness communities or druid communes.
Capable of learning anything put to them, The Roused make excellent laborers and defenders, carrying their sense of duty and loyalty to those they bond with seriously. The loyalty of The Roused is difficult to earn, but unwaivering. Those who find themselves facing their rage find themselves facing a force of nature itself.

Your Constitution increases by 2 points, and your Strength increases by 1 point.
Age
While the magic responsible for creating them extends their lifespan far beyond that of their ursine predecessors, The Roused enter adulthood in their early 20s, as humans do, and rarely live to see a century.
Size
The Roused are between 10 and 11 feet tall and weight between 1,000 and 2,000 pounds.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 40 feet and you have a base swimming speed of 30 feet.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write* Common. You can Speak to Animals (Bears).
*Your ability to write is limited by the your physiology. You can perhaps scratch out messages in the dirt, but you would not be able to manipulate the fine utensils needed to write with standard quills on standard parchment.
Ursine Heritage
You have proficiency in the Athletics skill and Advantage on saving throws against the poisoned condition.
Urside Build
You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
Protector
When an ally within 10ft. is targeted by an attack, you may use your reaction to reach out and grab them, swinging around and swapping places with them to become the target of the attack. This must be done before the attack roll is made.
Ursine Endurance
When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. You can’t use this feature again until you finish a long rest.
Keen Smell
The bear has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.
Ursine Attack
Like your ancestors, you do not rely on manufactured weapons and attack with ursine ferocity.
- Multiattack. The Roused makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its claws.
- Bite. Your unarmed attacks made with your bite deal 1d8 + your Strength modifier piercing damage.
- Claws. Your unarmed attacks made with your claws deal 2d6 slashing damage.
