Homebrew Awakened Rat Species Details

Through some form of magical intervention, be it arcane or divine, you now find yourself a thinking and speaking rodent. Perhaps you lived inside a Wizard's tower and the residual magic granted you sentience. Maybe you were present during the death of someone whose soul was not ready to leave the material plane. Or possibly you were a human cursed by a Warlock in a battle, forced to permanently walk the land as a furry beast. Whether you were a plain rat originally, intelligent race transformed into a rodent, or some other means entirely, your new existence is that of thinking, speaking, magically imbued rat.

Awakened Rat Traits

Life probably would have been easier had you been a squirrel.

Alignment

Awakened Rats tend to lean to chaotic alignments, as they let impulse and survival guide them. They can sometimes show a more evil side when they let their greed or gluttony get the best of them.

Size

Awakened Rats are between 6in and 11in long (without tail) and weigh around 5 to 35oz. Your size is Tiny.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 20 feet.

Darkvision

Accustomed to life underground, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 30 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Keen Smell

Awakened Rats have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Natural Weapon

An Awakened Rat can use their sharp teeth as a natural weapon to bite a creature.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity increases by 2 and your Strength decreases by 4.

Age

Awakened Rats, imbued with some form of magic have extended lives. They reach adulthood at around 6 months and can live up to 20 years.
