Homebrew Awakened Horse Species Details

Personality
When an awakened horse is affected by whatever insane magic spell or potion that caused the whole mess, their base personality is mixed with a seemingly random assortment of knowledge, including the ability to speak and knowledge of the world a typical horse really should not have access to, but an average citizen of the area might. It is as if the horse had always been sentient. It remembers its past as well, and often will desire freedom from whatever masters who own it. Sometimes its a lawful horse, willing to use diplomacy and parley. Other times chaos will escape with force or guile. It seems that horses can be any alignment, and will feel most strongly to those they interacted with as an animal in the past.

Relations
Due to their former life of often being slaves, many awakened horses seek to escape this life and enjoy a strong bout of wanderlust. As they come to terms with a world which does not recognize them for what they are, sentient beings, they may react differently from despair, to anger, to acceptance.

Fortunately, wandering wild wizards and druids with their foolish magic seem to be few and far between, meaning that awakened horses are a rare sight to see.

Physical Description
It goes without saying the awakened horse is a horse. In fact, save for an intelligent glint in the eye, one cannot tell the difference between a normal and awakened horse. At least until it starts talking and doing strange things.

Names
Awakened horses usually keep the names granted to them by others. Typical for horses, it ranges from anything human(or whatever race) to simple terms like "Sunsparkle" or "Betty's Fastest" or "Lucky 9".

Awakened Horse Traits

Look at you, your horsey horse. Follow your dreams and be the best damn horse you can be!

Ability Score Increase

When determining your ability scores, you increase one of those scores by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or you increase three different scores by 1. You follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy.

Age

Awakened Horses reach maturity around the age of 7. The tend to live longer than their mundane kin reaching around the age of 40.

Size

Your size is medium. However you count as one size larger when determining carrying capacity.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 40 feet.

Languages

Awakened horses speak Common and Horse. They can continue to communicate with their lesser kin, but often do not bother as it turns out their lesser kin are idiots compared to them.

Hooves

You have sturdy hooves, allowing you to move normally through difficult terrain on land. Also, your unarmed strikes deal 1d6 + your Strength modifier in bludgeoning damage.

Horseshoes

A farrier (Horseshoe Maker) can install horseshoes into your hooves to increase your martial output. Horseshoes deal 1d8 + your Strength modifier in bludgeoning damage and they count as a martial weapon that you have proficiency with.

No Hands

You do not have hands and have disadvantage on any skill check that typically require the use of hands. The magic of awakening the horse seems to have accounted for the lack of hands by giving the horse a somewhat nimble mouth. You can use your mouth to utilize a weapon that lacks the heavy property. You cannot speak while your mouth is occupied.

Mount

A medium or smaller creature is capable of mounting you, as in the Mounted Combat section of the PHB. Other horses or four legged creatures cannot mount you or vice versa.

A literal horse

Even though you are awakened you are still a literal horse. Other creatures have disadvantage on checks to determine if you are not a normal horse.

Creature Type

You are a Beast.
