Homebrew Starborn Species Details

There they were -  beautiful and filled with the power of stars. To deny them sanctuary would be a great loss to both us and to them.

Indeed, the group before me were formless - with bodies made of dark matter and stars. Their beauty indescribable to a third party. 

“Can you understand us?” a detached voice asked. “We've travelled far to find this place.”

“I can.” I replied. “Please, you are welcome to stay here as long as you like.”

And so it came to be that the Starborn of the planar voids came to make their home in the Court of Stars.

Born of Space

Starborn are born in the vaccum of space and quite happily thrive there, once formless, but now taking a humanoid shape to mingle with the Celestial Eladrin and other creatures of the Court of Stars.

Curious and Insatiable 

Researchers and Scientists make up many of the Starborn ranks. Naturally inquisitive, they tend to fixate on certain aspects of arcana or planar oddities and spend their time pursuing them until their last days. 

Starborn Names

Starborn have names that range from constellations to Deep Speech utterances. Much like their physical form, they only adopted names when they arrived in the Court of Stars, so naming conventions fall in line with the races they emulated, namely the Celestial Eladrin - though they do take inspiration from the Celestials of the realm as well.

Starborn Traits

Starborn have certain racial traits as a result of their spacial birth.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 1, and your Intelligence score increases by 2.

Age

Starborn live anywhere between 8-10 centuries, though most of this time is spent in the pursuit of knowledge, some feel the urge to travel beyond the Court of Stars.

Alignment

Starborn tend towards Neutrality, with a very passive world view. 

Size

Starborn emulate the size of their Eladrin neighbours. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet. Additionally, Starborn can hover up to 5ft off of the ground.

Darkvision

Thanks to your birth among the stars, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern colour in darkness, only shades of grey.

Malleable Mind

You can telepathically speak to any creature you can see within 30 feet of you. You don't need to share a language with the creature for it to understand your telepathic utterances, but the creature must be able to understand at least one language.

Born of the Void

When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the Thunderwave spell once with this trait as you become able to manipulate the dark matter your body is composed of. When cast in this way, it deals force damage instead of thunder. You regain the ability to do this when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the Enlarge/Reduce spell once with this trait as the malleable form you possess becomes more easily controlled. You regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

You can speak, read, and write Common and Deep Speech.
