Homebrew Capybarid Species Details

Anthropomorphic capybaras. They tend to have a calm, meditative temperament, and are known for being friends to all in the animal kingdom. While unassuming, they can hold their own if a fight breaks out, but their natural charm tends to deescalate potentially violent situations. They can range from as 75-150 pounds, but tend to be shorter and more robust than the average human. Capybarids are excellent swimmers with great lung capacity, as their primeval forms are largely aquatic. Capybarids tend to be herbivorous.

Capybarid Traits

Much like their primeval counterparts, Capybarids are incredibly social and sport a friendly disposition, making them friends to man and animal alike.

Shaped like a friend

Owing to their calm, unassuming nature and friendly disposition, you may cast animal friendship once per long rest. You have proficiency in nature.

Due to your kinship with small animals, you are able to speak with them at will. However, most small animals are not intelligent enough to convey complex information.

Strong Swimmer

Capybarids are excellent swimmers, with increased swimming speed and higher lung capacity compared to most other races.

You have a swim speed of 50, and can hold your breath for up to 15 minutes.

Strong teeth

Your incisors continue to grow throughout your life, requiring you to constantly gnaw on the objects to whittle them down. With enough effort and time, a Capybarid can chew through small wooden objects.

Bite. Your powerful jaws and continuously growing incisors are powerful weapons, which you can use to attack. If you hit with this bite attack, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier. However, if you do not hone your teeth, this is reduced to a flat 1 + your strength modifier bludgeoning damage.

Ability Score Increase

Your charisma is increased by 2 and your constitution is increased by 1. You have advantage on saving throws against poison.

Unique vocalizations

You know a number of unique vocalizations that only other capybarids understand. These are short sounds that can be used to signal danger, threaten others, note locations, and indicate membership in a social group.

These vocalizations are not a fully developed language, but retained from their capybarid's primitive form. As such they cannot convey complex or abstract ideas, but rather simple primal and instinctual information.

Languages

You know the Common language and one other language of your choice.
