Homebrew Atollian Species Details

The Atollians are a secluded race. They were initially encountered living in a secluded, underwater city deep in the Underdark. The city was almost entirely sealed off with a thick walls of rock-hard coral. These barriers also provided a level of magical protection. These fortifications help protect their cities amid the chaos of the Underdark. The Atollians are generally neutral beings, but will defend and isolate their cities an any cost. Atollians rarely venture beyond their hard-to-find settlements and rarely allow outside entry.

Atollians are adept at defending their aquatic homeland. When on land, they must sleep normally, but when resting half to fully submerged in water, they remain fully alert to their surroundings. Camping for the night? Find some water!

Variation

Atollians are generally medium humanoid coral-like creatures. They have no mouth or nose and generally two large glowing eyes. They have only one gender.

With no mouth to speak from, race relies on the ability to communicate telepathically. They can speak with any creature within 30 feet, provided they know the language.

Atollians grow continually throughout their life underwater. A new hatchling generally starts at 6 to 12 inches tall and grows an average of 2 inches a year, slowing to 1 inch per year at maturity. They grow their entire life. Their growth changes drastically depending on the quality of water lived in and space available. Atollians reach full maturity around age 28 (so mature height is an average of 5 feet, assuming uninterrupted, average growth.) Their weight is, on average, 150 pounds at 5 feet tall up to 210 pounds at 6 feet tall.

Atollians come in any color or pattern of colors. Outcroppings of coral can grow anywhere on their bodies, but generally grow from the tops of their heads or shoulders. These outcroppings can take any shape. Similarly, their hands generally have anywhere from 3 to 6 digits. The most common hand has 3 fingers and 1 opposing thumb.

Atollian Traits

The extent of the Atollian race has yet to be seen. The traits known are as follows.

Telepathic Amalgam

You are a living amalgam of symbiotic life.

You have no mouth. Your symbiotic flesh allows you to live without breathing. You do not eat solid foods. Your sustenance comes in the form of absorbing nutrient-rich liquids. You must, therefore, carry fluid rations in order to get your daily nutrition. In a bind, swampy, nutrient dense water will provide sustenance, but not for more than a tenday.

You cannot speak verbally and instead communicate telepathically with any creature within 30 feet, provided you know the language.

Aquatic Alertness

Atollians are naturally defensive creatures. As such, you can rest while fully alert, provided you can find some water.

On land, you must sleep normally. When you are half to fully submerged in water, you can rest while fully aware of your surroundings and notice approaching enemies and other events as normal.

When half to fully submerged in water, you also gain dark vision.

Barrier Reef

You can are granted the ability to cast the Barrier Reef spell.

From the Spell:

A magical wall of coral grows into existence at your touch. The wall is 6 inches thick and 5 feet wide. It grows at a rate of 3.5 feet per turn. The wall must be contiguous. The barrier has an AC of 16 and 18 hit points. Reducing the barrier to 0 destroys the entire contiguous panel, unless the GM specifies otherwise.

The barrier takes concentration to cast. If the barrier is attacked or something gets in the way, the spell ends. You must remain touching some part of the barrier for the duration of the spell.

The reef can have any shape you desire, but it can't occupy the same space as a creature or object. The wall doesn't need to be vertical have a foundation. Thus, you can use this spell to bridge a chasm or create a ramp. For example, you can create a 5 foot wide bridge at the same rate of 3.5 feet per turn. The bridge can hold up to 350 pounds. The bridge can span at most 20 feet without needing supports.

If you maintain your concentration on this spell for its whole duration, the wall can be granted a single resistance of your choosing from the following: Cold, Fire, Lightning, Bludgeoning, Slashing, or Piercing. If your concentration is broken, the resistance is not granted, but the barrier persists.
