Homebrew Axowaddl (Axolotl folk) Species Details
And a lone wandering Lizardfolk was stuck in the mud- at least, I'd thought. Upon approaching, it gazed upon me with beady, pleading eyes, harboring a gentle smile. Almost pathetic really, the way it begged wordlessly like a mutt fishing for food scraps. I offered it a branch to take hold of before hoisting it out of the bog. It repaid me in kind with some odd trinkets of its culture made from bones and shells, as well as a few gold coins before tromping back through the swamp.
The Axolotl folk, or Axowaddls as they have been called are a small, relatively unknown amphibious race that largely resemble salamanders, spotting long bright red or pink feather like fins on the sides of their head and neck. They come in a variety of colours, from creamy white to pitch black and as a whole are described as overly trusting and carefree creatures who reside in small tribes and nomadic waterside communities within swamps, wetlands and rivers, they are best known for their extreme regenerative abilities and their adorable smile.
Clumsy Land Dwellers
Given their rather stubby limbs and general awkwardness out of water its found quite remarkable their ability to handle such craft as sewing, weaving, wood and even stone carving. If you were to ever come across one, you wouldn't think of this short and odd looking creature as a dangerous hunter in the wild and this assumption is correct, the short limbs of the Axowaddls make for poor maneuvering out of the water, however in their natural habitat they are adept at catching small fish and searching for aquatic invertebrates.
Freaks of nature
Axolotl folk have something most creatures do not posses in this world, they can regrow their limbs and even seem to be resilient against poisons and deadly illnesses. This has made many scientists and scholars hunt for them to figure out their secrets. Some of them even wanting it to see if they can gain eternal life.
The few that remain
Axolotl folk are most at home in large bodies of freshwater and more recently have ventured further out onto land. Though they typically keep to their own fishing communities, they are a friendly race that has been known to be welcoming of outsiders and are rather curious of other races. unfortunately their curious and overly trusting nature has resulted in the gradual decline of their numbers from predation from much larger creatures and the high demand for them on the black market have pushed this race to near extinction.
Encouraging and Caring
If an Axowaddls imprints on you, you are likely stuck with it for the rest of your life, they can and will try to befriend anything they don't see as a predator or threat and are notorious for their ability to raise morale in groups with their antics. Their deep bonds work well with highly social races.
AFFECTIONATE AND CURIOUS
Dwarves. “They don't talk much outside of meals or drinking. Trying to make them smile is hard, and it's always an accomplishment when they do. Don't let them fool you, though; they form strong bonds like us, even if they don't show it very much.”
Tabaxi. “Horrifying. If I wanted something to look at me like food, I would have went to a harbor and laid myself on the butcher's table.”
Humans. “Humans are the best, most of the time! There's a few rotten ones, but they're so much more likely to smile and cuddle! Things get them down very easily, though. Maybe it's because they live longer than most of the beasts they tame. The concept of death is very hard on most of them.”
Child-Like Beings
What little is known of this race, it is that they show little to any signs of aging at all after reaching maturtly at the age of 12, keeping their juvenile features throughout adulthood. knowledge of their unusual regenerating abilities paird with the steadly growing rumors from thoses of the much longer living races claiming that their own ancestors have met or even befriended individuals that are still alive today, has brought up much speculation on whether or not the race has in fact, the key to immortality as they seem much like children wandering around without anyone finding out their real age.
Origins
the origins of theses little folk have yet to be fully studied, adventurers and the few that have attempted to researched them are left scratching their heads as to where they come from, as Axowaddls themselves don't seem to know and show little to no interest in writing down their history with most of their kind being illiterate. Leaving only descriptions that travelers and those who have visited their small colonies have penned down. some speculate that they are likely the result of wild magic, fae or god intervention, while others that they are a offshoot of Lizardfolk, grung or even Kobolds that have adapted for life underwater, the most often passed around rumor in bars and taverns that know of them is that they are the mutated offspring of a dragon born bard deciding to get freaky with a fish.
Axowaddl (Axolotl folk) Traits
A cute, little salamander with the most precious face in the world, a loyal friend to those they trust, your Axolotl character will be a blast to play wherever there is a drop of water.limb Regeneration
The Axowaddl is one of the very few vertebrate capable of regenerating amputated limbs and damaged organs and tissues, although you can only regenerate small wounds in short bursts. If you have 1 or more hit points and are below half your hit point maximum, as a bonus action, you may spend up to half of your hit dice to regain hit points, similar to when you would regain hit points during a short rest. Once you use this trait, you can not use it again until you finish a long rest. In addition, any severed limbs you have lost will grow back within 7 days, during those days you must spend at least 6 hours per day with your body submerged in water for the limbs to regrow.
Water Dependency
While maturing, Axolotl folk live almost exclusively underwater, and therefore a species-wide dependency on water has emerged.
If you fail to immerse yourself in water for at least 1 hour during a day, you suffer 1 level of exhaustion at the end of that day. You can recover from this exhaustion only through magic or by immersing yourself in water for at least 1 hour per exhaustion level.
