Homebrew Aabasarut Species Details

The short, stocky, creature stared at Zephyr with bulbous eyes, its nose flat with wide, thin holes like a snake. It snarled, revealing a row of shark-like teeth, and it's coarse tongue darted out, as if to taste the air. It had long round ears that seemed to detect every sound, and its hair was thick an grew only less than an inch from its head. Its long, tentacle-like arms ended with four-fingered hands, and its legs were short, but strong. Its body was covered with scales. It ran away with surprising speed, then leaped into a lake, swimming away quickly with it's flipper-like feet, not permitting Zephyr to ask it what is was or why it was here.

No one knows the origin of the Aabasari, a race of creatures who seem a mismatch of man, cephalopod, and snake, and range between a size a little upward of a gnome (3'8") to about the height of a dwarf (4'6"). They often live in caves, favoring the blind cavefish that live there, but venture outside occasionally. They can hold their breath for incredible lengths of time, and move faster than a human twice their size. Some Aabasari have adapted to different environments, leading to many different sub types.

There are few adventurer Aabasari, as most are content to stay in their homes, forming small bands of roving cave nomads that move through the underdark, living in deep oceans where light barely penetrates, in the heat of the desert, cold of the tundra, or wherever else they make their homes.

Aabasari are abandoned at birth, often in the same environment their parents lived in. Sometimes, though, they are left in a benign place, with the hopes that they will be able to live a safer life, but these efforts are doomed to failure s the young Aabasari feels the compulsion to make it's way to a harsher environment. Over the next eight decades they adapt to their home, and then live in a primal, animalistic state with little consciousness for their behavior, acting as if they were mere animals for the the next twenty-two. They, over another century sentience begins to emerge, and they can live for well over a thousand years after that, for a total of roughly 1,500 years of life on average, but the range can be anywhere from 1,250 to 1,750 years before they die of old age, but their harsh homes often cause them to die sooner.
