Homebrew Doppelganger Species Details
Doppelgangers are devious shapeshifters that take on the appearance of other humanoids, throwing off pursuit or luring victims to their doom with misdirection and disguise. Few creatures spread fear, suspicion, and deceit better than doppelgangers. Found in every land and culture, they can take on the guise of any individual of any race.
Doppelganger Traits
Doppelganger Racial TraitCreature Type
You are a Monstrosity. You are also considered a shapechanger for any prerequisite or effect that requires you to be a shapechanger.
Size
You are Medium.
Speed
Your walking speed is 30 feet.
Shapechanger
You can use your action to polymorph into a Small or Medium humanoid you have seen, or back into your true form. Your statistics, other than your size, are the same in each form. Any equipment you are wearing or carrying isn't transformed. You revert to your true form if you die.
Ambusher
You have an advantage on attack rolls against any creature you have surprised.
Surprise Attack
If you surprise a creature and hit it with an attack during the first round of combat, the target takes an extra 3 (1d4) damage from the attack.
Read Thoughts
You magically read the surface thoughts of one creature within 60 feet of you. The effect can penetrate barriers, but 3 feet of wood or dirt, 2 feet of stone, 2 inches of metal, or a thin sheet of lead blocks it. While the target is in range, you can continue reading its thoughts, as long as your concentration isn't broken (as if concentrating on a spell). While reading the target's mind, you have an advantage on Wisdom (Insight) and Charisma (Deception, Intimidation, and Persuasion) checks against the target.
