Homebrew Dragon Species Details

Is a dragon...

Dragon Traits

Your draconic heritage manifests in a variety of traits you share with other dragons.

Ability Score Increase

Your Charisma and Constitution increase by 1. Your strength increases by 2.

Age

Young dragons grow quickly. They walk hours after hatching, but quickly start to slow in growth rate. By 3 years old they are considered a small creature. By 30 years old they are adolescent and considered medium sized. By 50 years old or older they are an adult and are considered Large.

Size

Dragons are bigger and heavier than humans, standing well over 6 feet tall (9 feet if standing on their back legs) and averaging almost 450 pounds. Your size is Small, Medium or Large depending on your age.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 15 feet. Your base flying speed is 40 feet. Your climbing and swimming speed is 5 feet.

Draconic Ancestry

You have draconic ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table. Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.

Draconic Ancestry
Dragon Damage Type Breath Weapon
Black Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Blue Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Brass Fire 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Bronze Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Copper Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Gold Fire 15 ft. cone (Dex. save)
Green Poison 15 ft. cone (Con. save)
Red Fire 15 ft. cone (Dex. save)
Silver Cold 15 ft. cone (Con. save)
White Cold 15 ft. cone (Con. save)

Breath Weapon

You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d8 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d8 at 6th level, 4d8 at 11th level, and 5d8 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Damage Resistance

You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants.

Quadrapedal Weakness

As a quadraped you cannot use normal worn equipment, nor do you have hands. You have disadvantage on all actions that requires hands to function properly. It is up to the DM to determine what actions are rolled with disadvantage. All armor, weapons and worn equipment has to be custom made for you and is much more expensive. We recommend a price of three times the normal price, but this price is also determined by the DM.

Bestial Body

You are a dragon. You are feared by most common folk, making it difficult to make alliances and befriending people. Entering a town where you are not known is bound to cause chaos. Your body is stronger than most humanoids, giving you a higher natural AC [15 flat] and your unarmed attacks are stronger thanks to your claws and teeth, adding 1d6 damage to all unarmed attacks.

Draconic Greed

Any saving throws or ability checks you make to defend your property or home are rolled with advantage, such as detecting when someone is attempting to pickpocket you or if you have to grapple someone who is attempting to run off with your item(s). It is up to the DM to decide what is considered your property and home.
