Homebrew Common Bug Species Details

The peaks bristled with life. Thousands of tiny metallic Tink's filled the air as the bugs mined out the precious crystals. All of them varied in size and shape, but they all worked together to a unanimous goal.

The lone wanderer crept through the claustrophobic tunnels, keeping a careful eye out. Their nail lay in their hand, the other held a lantern. Even in this despairing condition, they still found a way to survive

-Excerpts from The Wanderers Journal

The most plentiful inhabitant of the ruined kingdom, Common Bugs made up the bulk of the kingdom. Not particularly skilled in any one area, but not particularly lacking in one either, they are a dependable people. It is unfortunate that most of them have been overcome by infection.

Simple Appearance

Whilst all bugs are unique, they still look very similar. A simple, round body with a Gray front and hard blue plated shell on their back, they have black limbs and bone white heads. They occasionally have 1 or 2 small horns, with 4 being the maximum. They have 2 solid black eyes. They range from being fat as a rock to as thin as a reed. They occasionally don't have necks.

 Multi-Faceted

The Common Bug has a range of likes and dislikes. Some live alone, secluded, others in great big societies (at least they did before the kingdom collapsed), and some just wander around aimlessly, exploring the expansive world. The largest settlement of free minded bugs would be Dirtmouth, as most others were destroyed by The Infection. Wanderers were caught by The Infected and slaughtered, and those who lived isolated were infected by their dreams of light.

Common Bug Names

There are numerous kinds of names that Common Bugs bear. At birth they are given personal names. If they choose to, they may have a descriptive name, which would describe their feats, role in society, appearance, traits or personality. Rarely, they will combine both, putting a descriptive name in front of their personal name.

Common Bug Traits

Common Bugs have strengths and weaknesses, as does any other race. What sets them apart is their relative lack of such. Specialisation often leads to other aspects being overlooked.

Ability Score Increase

There is strength in simplicity. The Common Bug is almost always able to offer something in a situation, and whilst sometimes it might not be extremely useful, at other times it can save an entire adventuring party. Your ability Score modifiers are all increased by 1.

Size

The Common Bugs of Hallownest range in size, from a measly 3" to a towering 7". However, the average size is 5". Your size class is small or medium.

Age

The age of the common Bug is around 50 years, though you can live to 70 so long as you are healthy and avoid danger. You mature at 14.

Languages

The Common Bug of Hallownest did not need to and most often did not speak a language other than Bug. Diplomats, Researchers, and generally gifted individuals spoke more. You speak Bug, and if your intelligence is above 16, you may speak 1 more  of your choosing.

Unique Attributes

Despite them all being mostly un-specialized, they are all still individuals, and individuals are unique. The Common Bug of Hallownest had one or two traits that were a unique combination and made them special among their ranks. From the traits outlined below, choose which ones you wish to use. You have a maximum of 4 points. The Traits name will tell you how many points it gives/takes to have. If there is a + in front of it, it costs that much. If there is a - in front of it, it gives you that number. However, those only happen when they have a negative affect upon you.

Here is the list:

  1.  Advanced Eyes (+2) - Your eyes are incredibly advanced and allow you to see extremely well. You can see even when there is no light in a room, there is magic blocking your view, etc.
  2. Camouflauge (+1) - Whether it be in rocks from the forgotten crossroads, ash from the kingdoms edge, web from Deepnest or moss from Greenpath, you have had enough foresight to see that being able to blend in is a valuable skill. Choose an area. In this area, and others like it, you have advantage on stealth saving throws.
  3. Claustrophobic (-1) - You despise small tunnels or rooms due to your claustrophobia. You also refuse to enter the Underdark or Deepnest unless forced. Mostly due to common sense.
  4. Compound Eyes (+1) - Your eyes are more advanced than others, allowing you to see in the dark. You have Darkvision up to 45ft
  5. Cool Hat (+1) - You own a very nice hat.
  6. Corpulent (-2) - Once a member of high society, your greed before you left has made you very disadvantaged when surviving in the new world. You are very fat and heavy, your walk speed is halved, you have disadvantage on dexterity saving throws and you sink in water.
  7. Dyed Shell (-2) - You have saved up enough geo before societal collapse to dye your shell. You can have patterns, block of colour, fades, whatever you wish. Unfortunately, you stick out like a sore thumb. You have disadvantage on stealth saving throws. But if you cover up your beautiful shell with camouflauge from the camouflauge trait, this is negated.
  8. Fragile Shell (-2) - Your shell is very fragile, and cannot withstand much damage. Your armour class is reduced by 2
  9. Ginormous (+7) - Some of the bugs of Hallownest towered over the others. These bugs were stronger, more durable, more confident. They were around 3x the size of others. Your health is multiplied by 1.5, your size class is large, you're around 16", and the number of dice you roll when using a weapon or something similar is increased by one.
  10. Hardened Shell (+1) - Your shell is much sturdier than others. Your AC is increased by 1
  11. Heavy (-1) - Being heavier than others means that you're a lot slower. Your walking speed is reduced by 5ft and you sink in water.
  12. Horn (+2) - You possess an extremely long and sharp horn. With this horn, you are able to charge at a target and impale them with your horn. The charge carries you 20ft and deals 1d6 piercing damage
  13. Hydrophobic (-3) - Through some ill fortune, Water melts your flesh in the same way that acid would. Every time you enter, touch or start your turn in water, you take 1d10 acid damage.
  14. Infected (-6) - The light drifting through the caverns, has unfortunately reached you as well. Whilst it has made you much stronger, that strength comes at a price too high. You have lost your mind and body to the infection. Glowing orange pustules sprout from your skin, your eyes scream with an orange light, and you have died and been reanimated by it. Any shred of your original personality has been largely erased. You feel the need to attack anyone that is not infected, and at any point the origin of the Infection could invade your mind and take over. You count as an undead creature, and at any time the DM can take control of your character.
  15. Misted Eyes (-3) - Whether through time, exposure to certain gases, or some other reason, your eyes have become clouded and you find it difficult to see. You have disadvantage on anything to do with seeing(e.g. perception), you have disadvantage on attack rolls and you cannot read.
  16. Nail Disciple (+2) - Though your training is still incomplete, you have still devoted a long time to trying to master the blade. You have managed to find and convince one of the Nailmasters to train you. You have proficiency in sword and sword like weapons, and you deal 1.5x as much damage with these weapons, rounded up.
  17. Researcher (+2) - You spent your life researching other cultures. Because of this, you know all languages that are in Hallownest and can speak them all fluently. You are able to speak, understand, read and write Bug, Weaver, Mosskin, Crystal, Acid, Mushroom and Ancient. You also have advantage on history and religion checks.
  18. Superior Eyes (+3) - Your eyesight is greater than nearly anyone else. You have 4 eyes in total, which are both composed of millions of smaller eyes. Not only can you see even when there is no light in a room, there is magic blocking your view, etc. But you are also able to see through walls that are up to 30ft thick.
  19. Wings (+3) - You have 2 pairs of simple, translucent wings. The wings are very similar to a dragonflies, only smaller. They are easily damaged and take roughly 1d12 days to heal. They grant you a flying speed of 20 ft.
