Homebrew Voort Species Details

The wizard Harron Karabast, considered a mad conjurer and alchemist by some, elevated the first Voort from the mighty boars. Even after Karabast was killed and his tower torn down, the Voort remained, but any future experiments to increase their intelligence or skill died with him. However, it is said that part of the magic remains; rarely, a Voort is born whose animalistic desires do not overtake their mind and seek a life beyond mere tribalism. These Voort rise to become proud leaders of their communities, or venture into the world to prove their worth. Many of these become adventurers, achieving greatness for their mighty deeds.

Strong Like A Boar

Voort exhibit many animalistic characteristics, and their appearance varies somewhat. Their skin tones generally range from pale white to rosy pink to greenish-gray, and prominent tusks and small horns are the most common shared elements among these folk.

Primal Emotion

Beyond the gifts of intelligence and speech from Karabast, Voort are deeply in tune with their emotions. Everything, from laughing to raging, is boisterous and upfront. Voort are not known for being deceptive for this reason. They enjoy the simpler pleasures — feasting, drinking, wrestling, drumming, and wild dancing — with reckless abandon. They tend to be short-tempered and sometimes sullen, more inclined to action than contemplation and to fighting than arguing. And when they love, Voort do not have two words to denote friendship from romance. All love is treated with the same seriousness and a Voort who has declared one a friend is an ally forever — or gets their heart utterly broken by betrayal.

Socially Dimorphic

The males, known as boars, are primarily pressed into military or martial service. The females, known as sows, primarily tend to all other duties: business, cooking, healing, religion, domestic duties, and education are all within their purview. Each tribe has a Matriarch to tend to politics and a Patriarch to be commander-in-chief of their armies.

However, boars and sows are equally likely to leave their tribes and strike out as adventurers. The few that have left their tribes are usually those who do not hold their tribe's segregated views. Due to the Voort propensity to trust tribe above all else, those who choose to leave the tribe usually had to fight their way out — and often may not return.

Voortish Names

Voort usually have names appropriate to the culture in which they were raised.

A male Voort raised among more liberally-minded tribesmen will often be named something with gentler “K” sounds, while those raised in a more bestial tribe will contain hard “G” and “Ugg,” emulating the grunting sounds of their ancestors.

Female Voort’s names often contain vowel or consonant sounds that emulate their ancestors' squealing and snuffling.

Male Voort Names: Gorc, Skaldag, Fug, Kufbrug, Gartogg, Ortugg, Wartogg, Thok, Klagg

Female Voort Names: Gweek, Greel, Snoruuk, Potwa, Ugmush, Morrt, Gorge, Gakfedd

Voort Traits

Your Voort character has certain traits derived from its animal ancestry.

Age

Voort mature faster than humans, reaching young adulthood by age 6 and full adulthood around age 13. They age at a relatively normal rate after that and have been theorized to only be able to live to about 50 years old, at which point they would be considered extremely venerable. However, no known members of their species have lived past 45 due to their aggressive nature.

Kin of Beasts

As a derivative of the lowly pig, Voort have a connection to their porcine kin.

You gain proficiency in the Animal Handling skill.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Size

Voort are somewhat larger but stockier than humans, and they range from 5 to well over 6 feet tall, with their average falling closer to 6 feet than 5 feet. Your size is Medium.

Speed

The extra density of a Voort is well compensated for by their strength. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Hot-Blooded

With your blood burning hotter than most races, you are naturally insulated better against intense cold.

You gain resistance to cold damage and cold environments.

Pigheaded

When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. You can’t use this feature again until you finish a long rest.

Mighty Cleaver

You gain proficiency with handaxes, greataxes, and battleaxes.

When you score a critical hit with any handaxe, greataxe, or battleaxe attack, you can roll one of the weapon’s damage dice one additional time and add it to the extra damage of the critical hit.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Voortish. Voortish is a snuffling, snorting language including loud grunts and high squeals. It is written primarily in pictograms, but some more enlightened members have learned to write it using Common script, though the number of snorts and squeals is hard to represent with consonants and vowels and therefore remains difficult to read.
