Homebrew Alu-Demon Species Details
“Say, why does the baron cambion need a whole other name? Who does he think he is?”
Alu-Demons are horrid creatures, the progeny of one mortal and one demon parent. Distrust against these beings usually serves as a means of self-preservation for most people, rather than prejudice
Monstrous At Best
While most physical characteristics differ between Alu-Demons depending on the nature of their demonic lineage, all share a few basic traits. Alu-Demons are bipedal and roughly humanoid in appearance. Their facial features are a mix of both their mundane, mortal bloodline, and the horrifying demonic visage: For example, an elven Alu-Demon may retain the pointed ears of their people, but also possess the blackened skin and curved forehead-mounted horn of a Babau. A human Alu-Demon may have fair white skin, with the compound, bug-like eyes of the Chasme. The more mundane Alu-Demons are sometimes mistaken for Tieflings; however, Alu-Demon traits tend to be much more gruesome and bizarre than their infernal cousins. Other examples of demonic traits include sharpened claws, an exterior skull, gray, black, or green skin, ram horns, boney protrusions, or a leathery tail.
Progeny of the Abyss
Alu-Demons are, by nature, cruel, vicious beings, with the taint of a demonic bloodline corrupting everything they do. While an Alu-Demon is all too happy to kill, maim, and destroy on a whim, working with a team of adventurers requires a bit more coercion.
Alu-Demons are highly motivated by greed, lust, and the baser impulses. While an Alu-Demon will happily annihilate a team of Orcs attacking the village, the difficulty is in stopping the Alu-Demon from annihilating the village, too. Adventuring teams may find them difficult to work with unless they maintain sufficient bribes in the form of treasure and promises of future slaughters.
Society
On the mortal planes, Alu-Demons tend to integrate with already established communities in which their parents live. If too outlandish appearing, or if the natives are superstitious enough, they can be exiled. Pure Alu-Demon communities are few and lacking in structural economies, although they can exist.
In the Abyss, however, Alu-Demons fit in quite well with the savage nature of the realm. They tend to stick close to parents, either in cooperation or in service. Alu-Demons traveling alone in the Abyss tend to naturally gravitate towards a Layer holding their own kind.
Soul Collectors
Utmost value to demonkind, alu-demons work to collect the essence of the living. Their demonlord masters send them to the Material Plane to fulfill a mortal's end of the bargain, taking their soul whole or on rare occasion only part of it. If they are tasked to find a certain individual, they fight to the death to acquire their spirit. These fiends are capable of living with or stalking a person for decades if needed before they strike where their target is most vulnerable.
Alu-Demon Names
Alu-Demons are often proud of their heritage and will name themselves either partially or entirely after other demon species. Other Alu-Demons will base their names on the Abyssal root words for evil or immoral concepts. Almost all Alu-Demons pride their names on being difficult or uncomfortable to speak and pronounce.
Male: Abraxes, Forneus, Cthugha, Valas, Kazri, Yochlo, Kastig, Maurez
Female: Kali, Zhah, Bali Raj, Nyogtha, Bebeli, Orla, Maril, Shizu
Alu-Demon: Cambion
The mothers of true cambions always died in childbirth, serving to strand the newborn on the Material Plane, where it would be orphaned, or in the Abyss where it would be abused by the demons who looked down upon such children. Never accepted by either society, cambions invariably grew up bitter and twisted but, due to their powers, they often became exceptional assassins. Many though, were made ambassadors to the worshipers of various demonic powers, usually Graz'zt, Demogorgon, Orcus and Lolth.
Loners by nature, they liked to get lost in the crowds of large cities, especially in places where people didn't ask questions. Good-aligned cambions were rare, but sometimes, if their mother was good- or neutral-aligned, they took on her non-evil nature and were subsequently doomed to a life of loneliness, as not even their demonic patrons would accept them.
Cambions excelled in luring mortals to the Abyss; the only demons better at it were succubi. They then warned demons of the mortals' approach and let them do what they did best so the souls could be turned into larvae or manes.
Cambions were very ambitious and always put as much effort as they could into whatever they attempted, maybe either to prove themselves to a parent or to themselves, but regardless, they made great leaders, information brokers, etc. and they were often catalysts for major events.
Alu-Demon: Succubus
Folktales and bards' songs tell tales of succubi and incubi falling in love with a certain individual and even bearing children with them, however this is an extremely rare occasion. These demons usually do not feel emotions, nor do they have the desires a human or other intelligent race would. They are born to fulfill only one goal: serve their archdemon creator. Some folk mistake their decade-long missions for love or attraction, however most of the time this is only a means to an end for them.
Rarely however, succubi and incubi are born with emotions and feelings like any other race. When in pursuit of a person they might meet their soulmate and fall in real, humanly love with them. This is a dangerous game for them because if their archdevil finds out there is only one way for them to survive: kissing their one true love without taking their soul. If they are capable of such an act, their bond to the Kingdom of Never is broken, their creator has no domain over them anymore and they lose their natural hunger for souls.
Alu-Demon Traits
It’s hard to make generalizations about alu-demons, but your character has these traits.Fiendish Charm
One humanoid you can see within 30 feet must succeed on a DC: 14 Wisdom saving throw or be magically charmed for 1 day. The charmed target obeys your spoken commands. If the target suffers any harm from you or another creature or receives a suicidal command from the cambion, the target can repeat the saving throw, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a target's saving throw is successful, or if the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to Fiendish Charm for the next 24 hours.
Fire Ray
Ranged Spell Attack: range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 4d6 fire damage.
Wings from the Nine Hells
You have a small set of wings on your back. However, these wings are not strong enough to hold your weight for an extended period of time. You can use your wings to suddenly thrust yourself forward 10 feet on the battlefield as a bonus action. This movement doesn't provoke opportunity attacks. You regain the ability to use this feature after taking a short or long rest.
