Homebrew Bone Fairy Species Details
Bone Fairies are a species of Fae or Fairy. There are very few still known to the world.
We all know of the tooth fairy. That is a variation of Bone fairy. Some hoard bones like dragons, using them as decoration or wards. Others collect them for more serious matters like magic casting.
Mature bone fairies begin to grow their own horns and small boney protrusions. These get larger with age the most impressive being found only amongst the eldest of bone fae. Some will collect the bones of the already deceased, like a small bird found on the roadside. However, some have made deals with deities or organizations and actively seek out prime specimens to harvest.
Personalities
The Hermit:
These bone fairies are often found in extremely remote areas. Sometimes in hostile environments or harsh conditions. This may be at the peak of a mountain that is incredibly difficult for the average creature to climb, or deep in the swamps of a remote uncharted land. Players who choose an extreme environment should grant their characters a form of immunity or resistance to these particular elements.
These particular fairies often have hoards. They may collect a certain kind of bone, or a particular creature. They may collect random bones and form crystals over them for enchanting/magic purposes.
The stories humans often tell of the mysterious cloaked figure in the dangerous lands they avoid is probably a bone fairy. Those few who do seek the mysterious creature either become part of their collection, or evade their chaotic tendencies by a hair, and have tall tales of warning and woe to share upon their return.
The Nomad:
Nomadic bone fairies are much more likely to be encountered, though they are still rare.
The tooth fairy is a perfect example of a nomadic bone fairy, she also happens to have a hoard however that she keeps hidden by magical means.
Nomadic bone fairies tend to be much more lawful than the hermits of their race. They are much more cultured and used to interactions with other races. They will often do things in exchange for goods or items that they need or want.
However, beware if you steal from a nomadic bone fairy, intentionally or not, they will stop at nothing to teach you a lesson or strike you down. Not many nomadic fairies have hoards, so their few possessions are prized.
The Dark One:
This isn't necessarily a solitary fae creature. But it certainly is the most terrifying. In fact some of these fairies live in small communities hidden away at the edges of the earth or the depths of the Underdark. If you wander into one you're doomed to never return either to meet your death or become a slave. They wander out only to collect for their communities, though they often use their powers to manipulate others to do their dirty work.
The more unique your race the more interesting you are to these Faeries. Their favorite food is bone marrow.
They often worship Loviatar or other Dark Deities. They have the most impressive crowns, cultivated and cared for, sometimes carved with patterns. If you should ever obtain a crown detached from one of these faeries you will be set for life financially, but a dark shadow of a mysterious curse will follow whoever possesses it.
Culture and Aging
They mature rather quickly and tend to have a strange patchwork of blood vessels creeping across their body in their youth.
Once they mature, their skin grows pale with time eventually reaching a strikingly white coloration. At this time small nubs of horns may appear on their face, head, or backs of hands, knees. Basically anywhere they may need extra protection they may grow boney protrusions.
All Bone fae take pride in their horns and shape them into fantastic art pieces like permanent crowns. Complimenting a bone fairy on their "crown" not "horns" is the best way to win over their affection. However, if you damage, degrade, or disrespect them in any way they will surely be your enemy.
The bones take a very long time to grow. A medium sized crown might be found on a 150 year old bone fae, whereas some of the larger more impressive structures approach 400-600 years of age.
It is unknown how old bone fae can live till, some say they're immortal only able to be struck down in battle. They have a remarkably fast healing time and often their scars will form boney structures across their skin, thus making their healed wound stronger than before.
There is even a legend of an elder bone fae, who had been in so many battles during their lifetime that their body was made of naturally articulated bone, like a natural armor grown over countless years.
As bone fairies age the skin from their mouths recedes, exposing fearsome teeth resembling that of a canine or large cat. They consider themselves to be things of beauty, whereas the world tends to cower in fear from their strange, death like appearance. The only place they can somewhat fit in is in the under dark.
