Homebrew Comet Dwarf Species Details

Comet Dwarves evolved from their planet-dwelling cousins after spreading to the stars. They are known as the most prolific miners of asteroids, meteors, and comets in known Wildspace systems. The distance from their historical homes beneath the surface of worlds has, counter-intuitively, made their connection to stone and earth stronger, allowing them to feel subtle movements in the rock around them.

Comet Dwarf Traits

As a Comet Dwarf, your character has access to the following features:

Ability Score Increase

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.

Creature Type

You are a Humanoid. You are also considered a dwarf for any prerequisite or effect that requires you to be a dwarf.

Size

Dwarves stand between 4 and 5 feet tall and average about 150 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet. You also have a burrowing speed of 20 feet, and you can mine through solid stone at a rate of 1 foot per minute, so long as you have appropriate mining equipment, such as a pick axe.

Darkvision

Accustomed to life underground, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Dwarven Resilience

You have advantage on saving throws you make to avoid or end the poisoned condition on yourself. You also have resistance to poison damage.

Forge Wise

Your connection to earthen elements gives you deeper insight into how to shape and mold it. You gain proficiency with two of the following options of your choice: Jeweler’s Tools, Mason’s Tools, Smith’s Tools, or Tinker’s Tools.

Stonecunning

As a Bonus Action, you gain Tremorsense with a range of 60 feet for 10 minutes. You must be on a stone surface or touching such a surface to use this Tremorsense. The stone can be natural or worked. You can use this Bonus Action a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.

Meteoric Magic

Your deep connection to stone, rock and earth gives you the innate magical ability to accelerate it to powerful speeds. You have access to the magic stone cantrip. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the catapult spell with this trait and, once you do, you can’t cast the spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast the spell using spell slots you have of the appropriate level. When you cast through this trait, rather than by consuming spell slots, the catapult spell can only target objects made of, or which include an amount, or earthen minerals. These minerals can be in the form of rock, stone, dirt, metal, gem, or crystal.

Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Languages

Your character can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character. The Player’s Handbook offers a list of languages to choose from. The DM is free to modify that list for a campaign.
