Homebrew Bulbasaur Species Details

Bulbasaur is a small, quadrupedal amphibian Pokémon that has blue-green skin with darker patches. It has red eyes with white pupils, pointed, ear-like structures on top of its head, and a short, blunt snout with a wide mouth. A pair of small, pointed teeth are visible in the upper jaw when its mouth is open. Each of its thick legs ends with three sharp claws. On Bulbasaur's back is a green plant bulb, which is grown from a seed planted there at birth. The bulb also conceals two slender, tentacle-like vines and provides it with energy through photosynthesis as well as from the nutrient-rich seeds contained within.

It is found in grasslands and forests throughout the Kanto region. It has been observed that a Bulbasaur's bulb will flash blue when it is ready to evolve. If it does not want to evolve, it struggles to resist the transformation. Many Bulbasaur gather every year in a hidden garden in Kanto to evolve into Ivysaur in a ceremony led by a Venusaur.

Bulbasaur Traits

As a bulbasaur, you have the following racial traits.

Size

Bulbasaur rarely reach above 3 feet in height. Your size is Small.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 25 feet.

Evolution

At 4th level, you can choose to evolve into Ivysaur or remain as a Bulbasaur.

Leech Seed

You conjure a seed infused with necrotic essence and launch it at one creature that you can see within range. On a hit, the seed imbeds itself into the creature skin. At the end of each of its turns in combat, the creature takes necrotic damage equal to 1d4 + your Wisdom modifier, and you regain hit points equal to the amount of damage dealt. You can choose to end this effect on the creature as a bonus action.

Powerful Build

You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

Quadruped

As a quadruped, you lack the fine motor skills of your bipedal counterparts. You cannot crouch and you cannot squeeze into an area that is one size smaller than your own. Any climb that requires hands and feet is considered difficult terrain for you. You cannot manipulate weapons, tools, or objects that are not specially designed for use with your mouth or forelimbs.

Racial Trait (Pick One)

You can pick one of the following racial traits:

  • Chlorophyll. During harsh sunlight, your movement speed is doubled.
  • Overgrow. When you are at or below 1/3 of your maximum Hit Point total, the damage dice for spells are doubled.

Speech of Beast and Leaf

You have the ability to communicate in a limited manner with Beasts, Plants, and vegetation. They can understand the meaning of your words, though you have no special ability to understand them in return. You have advantage on all Charisma checks you make to influence them.

Type Effectiveness

You have a number of vulnerabilities, resistances, and immunities as part of your typing. You are vulnerable to fire and cold damage. You are resistant to acid, lightning, necrotic, and poison damage. You are immune to the Poisoned condition.

Vine Whip

You can sprout versatile, vine-like appendages from the bulb on your back. They function as a secondary set of limbs, with the following features:

  • You can make a melee weapon attack with your vine, dealing bludgeoning damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier on a hit.
  • You can make attempt to grapple one opponent of your choice that you can see.
  • You can hold an object that has the light property, but you cannot manipulate it in a complex manner. For example, you can hold a key, but you cannot use it to open a door.

If your vines are damaged in any way, they grow back at the end of a short rest.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write in Common.
