Homebrew Adventerous Faerie Dragon Species Details

The miniature, iridescent, and mischievous Faerie Dragons are known as the Pranksters of the Wilds for their numerous tricks on residents and visitors to fey lands and forests.  Though playful and vexatious, Faerie Dragons are also inquisitive, especially when young.

Playful Adventures

Faerie dragons go where the fun is. For many, this means dwelling near portals to the Feywild, enjoying that realm’s unpredictable magic and boisterous revels. Yet it can just as easily mean residing among other peoples—stealing baubles from shrines, nesting in cluttered attics, or following explorers and other intriguing individuals on their travels. As much as they love their homes and hoards, faerie dragons abandon both without a second thought if adventure beckons.  Yet, for most Faerie Dragons, this is a temporary departure to play a game, of which they soon tire, returning to their homes with strong ties to the Feywilds.

But for some, especially the young orange Faerie Dragons, this call to adventure is too strong, and leave their homes behind.  It could be an inspiring bardic tale that makes them want to play the part of a Paladin or a display of magical might that the young Faerie Dragon wishes to learn.  It could even be by accident, having fallen asleep inside an adventurer's pack, only to find themselves far from home with no idea how to return.  Whatever the reason, they begin to feel their connection to the Feywilds weakening the longer they stay away from home.

Their connection to the Feywild is never severed, but the mortal world slowly changes them.  They lose some of their magic, and the characteristic aging of Faerie Dragons changes.  They no longer innately learn new magic as they age, and their scales change due to their experiences, not their age.  Some even lose interest in playful games, becoming more serious.  But no matter how much banality they accept into their lives, their connection to the Feywilds never ends; it calls to them.  Though changed, they will always be welcomed home by their families, who are eager to hear about the adventures of their kin.  Some who return decide to let their experiences fade into dreams and stories, returning to the normal life cycle of a Faerie Dragon, but those who develop a strong sense of self retain their experiences and their new scales, seeing them as a badge of honor.  These Faerie Dragons become more than just playful pranksters but guardians of these faerie abodes and lairs.

Fun, Friendship, and Apple Pie

No matter how stuffy an Adventurous Faerie Dragon may act, at their core, they are still motivated by fun and rebel at boredom and tedium.  They may find it fun to play the part of a guard, but after some time, they will grow bored of the role unless something funny happens.  While they may try to apprentice under a wizard, any arcanist would be wise not to force an adventurous Faerie Dragon to keep with repetitive tasks or have them read long, boring books (though picture pop-up books are acceptable); they may find a precious experiment ruined by the bored apprentice.

Faerie Dragons love one thing more than fun: friends because it is more fun when you have friends in the act.  Faerie Dragons are rather discerning when they call someone a friend.  They may watch a person for a few minutes or spend weeks butting into their lives before they are willing to call someone a friend.  In other words, there is no telling when or if a Faerie Dragon will see you as a friend, but when they do, they are your friend for life, whether you like it or not.  A Faerie Dragon friend is highly loyal, but this does not mean you will be immune to some light-hearted pranking.

And if there is one thing they love more than friends and fun, it would be apple pies.  While a Faerie Dragon would never turn down pie, the apple pie is the king of pies in their eyes.  They will go out of their way to acquire an apple pie, which has led to the downfall of a few Faerie Dragons.  Elders tell the young scary stories about false pies meant to trick unwary Faerie Dragon. Still, even these stories will not stop a Faerie Dragon from attacking an apple pie before it gets involved in any other battle that might be happening.

Adventerous Faerie Dragon Traits

While their connection to the Feywild has weakened, these Faerie Dragons enter a world with new door, new possibilities. They can follow any path, take on a new part, or even envent an entirely new game. The world is theirs to explore.

Ability Score Increase

Increase one attribute by 2 and a second by 1, or increase three attributes by 1 each.

Age

Red Faerie Dragons can walk within hours of hatching, and they will fly after a month.  They will mature during their first year of life, with their instinctual magic manifesting during this time.  As their scales turn to orange, they risk becoming fascinated by the mortal world and following an adventure out of the Fey Forests.  It will take them a few years to pick up on the skills and abilities of the path they choose to follow.  Faerie Dragons in the mortal world can live up to 50 years.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.  Your base flying speed is 60 feet.

You may not fly if you are encumbered or while wearing medium or heavy armor.

Size

Faerie Dragons are typically 2 feet long, weighing 5 to 10 pounds.

Tiny player races have special rules for weapons with the following properties:

  • Tiny races do not benefit from the Light property, so these weapons cannot be used off-hand for two-weapon fighting. But they are still a one-handed weapon.  Ultra-light weapons may be crafted for use by tiny races.  These weapons do only a single point of damage and have the same critical range as the original weapon type.
  • Versatile weapons must be wielded in two hands and deal their basic damage rather than their versatile damage.
  • Tiny creatures have disadvantage on attack rolls with Two-handed weapons.
  • Heavy weapons cannot be wielded by Tiny races at all.
  • All other one-handed weapons must be wielded in two hands.
  • Tiny races do not benefit from the Finesse property unless the weapon is also light.
  • You may not fly if you are encumbered or while wearing medium or heavy armor.
  • Squeeze into smaller spaces – as small as 15 inches
  • Make better use of cover – in general, where another PC would gain half cover, or three-quarters cover, you gain three-quarters cover and total cover, respectively. You can also gain half cover from objects that would otherwise be considered incidental, such as rocks or tree saplings.
  • Occupy the same space as another Tiny or larger creature.

Darkvision

You have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Faerie Dragon Magic

You know the Dancing Lights, Evanesce, Mage Hand, Message, and Minor Illusion cantrips and can cast them at will.  Charisma is your spell cast attribute for these cantrips.

The tenuous connection to the Feywild has weakened the innate abilities of Faerie Dragons to turn invisible and communicate telepathically.  These abilities have been replaced with the ability to cast the cantrips Evanesce and Message.

Euphoria Breath

You can exhale a puff of euphoric gas at one creature within 5 feet of you.   The target must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw, or for 1 minute, the target can’t take reactions and must roll a d6 at the start of each of its turns to determine its behavior during the turn.  The save DC equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus.

On a roll of 1-4, the target takes no action or bonus action and uses all of its movement to move in a random direction.  The target is vulnerable to attacks of opportunity as they move.  If the d6 result is a 5-6, The target doesn’t move and can make a Wisdom saving throw, ending the effect on itself on a success.
