Homebrew Twili Species Details

Born of Twilight

A typical Twili, even so long separated from their Hyrulean kin, still greatly resemble humans. At a distance, they're even easily mistaken for each other. Up close, however, the differences become very obvious. Like humans, Twili often come in many different shapes, sizes and body types, but proportions are almost always exaggerated in some way. Most commonly, this leads to them being tall, and comparatively lanky.

Twili skin tones are almost universally shades of grey, sometimes leaning more towards blue. Similarly, their hair is almost always a bright, fiery orange. Some even claim that it glows, though their here has no flurescent properties. Their eyes are bright, intense colors, such as red, orange, green, yellow or purple

Much of this is why Twili tend to lead very secular lives. They avoid relying on the will of gods or other such greater powers. Those that find themselves in service to the Twilight Gods or the gods of the Light World endeavour to hone their own skills. Even then, they rarely practice ritual or piety, and even more rarely do they devote their lives to beings that require either. A Twili cleric is nearly unheard of.

In their daily life, daily rituals for the Twili are more a matter of habit and necessity than religious devotion. Fetching water from wells, shopping, cooking, training and even refreshing magical wards if need be are done to a specific schedule. To outsiders, the consistency they work with can be almost baffling. But Twili abhor avoidable chaos, and work hard to expunge it from their lives.

Names that twili take on are strange affairs. A given twili will typically have a family name from birth, but no given name. Their peers growing up will often give them any number of nicknames, but it is only upon coming of age are they given a personal name. Often, this name is chosen themselves, making each one a reflection of the person that carries them.

Twili Traits

Your Twili character has traits that are shared by all of this race native to the Twilight Realm.

Age. Twili have a lifespan twice as long as humans, reaching maturity in their late teens and living until their second century.

Alignment. Twili have a complex system of morality that can at times seem completely alien to a typical Hyrulean. Order and tradition are paramount to their society, however. They are typically lawful neutral, with good and evil tendencies.

Size. Twili tend to tower in height over most humans, being anywhere from 5½ feet tall to nearly a full seven feet. By comparison, they are rather light and willowy, ranging from just over 90 pounds to about 170 at the high end. You are medium.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Superior Darkvision. Having lived in the perpetual dusk of the Twilight Realm, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness - including magical darkness - as if it were dim light. Unlike many with this trait, you can discern color in darkness.

Languages. You can speak, read and write Hylian and Twili. Twili is a haunting language, with drawn out syllables that always seem to echo no matter where they are.

Masters of the Arcane

When the twili first came to the Twilight Realm, there were strangers to a strange world. Unable to survive in their new home, it seemed to be a bitter end to face. Just as their ancestors were about to give into their despair, they were approached by a set of mysterious beings. To these beings, this world was home, and they were masters of their realm. Taking pity on these stranded folk, these beings, known today as the Twilight Gods, granted a shard of their power to the twili.

This power was magic, and twili are now naturals in it's use. With this power, they molded the world - and their own forms - to ensure the survival of their descendants. They crafted the Sols, orbs that cast life-giving light upon the world, and crafted the lands into something that could sustain human life. While many of these techniques have been lost to the annals of time, all twili have some skill in magic to this day.

The twili that have left their home realm for Hyrule often are surprised by the lack of magic in people's everyday lives. Things that they have come to take for granted are challenged. Coupled with the fact that they can no longer withstand the sun as well as their ancestors, living in Hyrule has proved to be a unique hurdle for the shadow folk. They are familiar with hardship, however, and take everything in stride.

Walkers in Shadow

Coming from a world of dusk and magic, the twili look at the world of Hyrule much differently than the other races. Hyrule is a land of strange opposites to what they have known, and it's never more obvious than when walking into one of the "shadow districts" of the various large settlements. Here, the life doesn't truly start until the sun begins to set. At this time, the twili emerge from their homes, keeping city life going all through the night.

Even still, many twili are rather quiet in their daily life. By nature, they avoid conflict, and often will keep to themselves. Twili society functions entirely by the will of the populace. In the Twilight Realm, the monarch is chosen by the power of the magic that courses through the land, and the people can collectively revoke those powers if they feel someone else is more deserving. In the Light World, the people will often make laws and divide burdens democratically.

Agnostic and Secular

While the twili refer to their ancient benefactors as the Twilight Gods, they do not worship them. In fact, since Betrayal of Zant, the twili people have been incredibly wary of the concept of "gods" in general. After all, if a false god can give the Betrayer such power, then who's to say that real gods even exist. Coupled with the prejudice that the people of Hyrule treat them with, and it's no surprise that most refuse to worship the gods of the world. Piety is a rare trait among them indeed.
