Homebrew Bonneter Species Details

A sentient hat. Can take on many forms of hat via shapeshifting. When they are worn by a creature, they can "capture" said creature and control it, moving the creatures body as their own.

Unlike most, hopefully all, hats you know of, Bonneters possess the ability to see, hear, and feel without capturing a creature, nor having eyes, ears, or a nervous system. However, they must capture a creature to be able to move at any reasonable speed.

Bonneters do not need to eat, nor sleep to survive, nor do they acquire any ill effects from lack of sleep or sustenance. However, they gain benefits from both, via the Well Rested bonus and regaining spell slots

Creating Your Character

If you create a Bonneter character, follow these additional rules during character creation.

Ability Score Increases and Decreases

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase your characters charisma score by 2 and increase your characters wisdom score by 1, and finally set your strength stat to 0. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy.

The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You’re free to follow those suggestions or to ignore them, unless it says to increase your strength stat. Whichever scores you decide to increase, none of the scores can be raised above 20.

Languages

Bonneters can speak, read, and write in common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character. The Player’s Handbook offers a list of widespread languages to choose from. The DM is free to add or remove languages from that list for a particular campaign. A Bonnetter can only speak while possessing another being

Creature Type

Bonneters are a form of construct unless actively capturing another creature, then they are that creature type until they un-capture the creature

Life Span

The typical lifespan of a Bonneter is around 500 years, assuming the character does not meet a violent end on an adventure.

Height and Weight

All Bonneters are of the small size class. Weight is dependent on the type of hat the Bonneter decides to be, though they will almost always be in the lightweight class
