Homebrew Athente (Wings) Species Details

The Athente are a rare race of peoples with a small population. They are a short statured people, and secretive in their own way. The Athente resemble other humanoids, but have an extremely unique appearance, with large, owlish eyes and delicate, narrow features otherwise. They have soft downy feathers growing from most parts of their bodies and their arms may or may not double as usable wings depending on their age. 

Unlike other peoples with animal features they claim no great Feywild heritage or godlike curse, they claim to be only of the material plane, close to the ebb and flow of magic across eons.

When the Athente are born from large eggs, they look much like human children save for their unusual facial features, clawed feet and small, delicate forms. As they grow, the Athente begin to grow in their wings and feathers, their pointed nails become rough claws and their feet begin to become more birdlike. The Athente aspire to achieve their last stage of life with as much wisdom, education, and power as they possibly can so they may guide the next generation of Athente and peoples beyond. Their final stage of life they become Large, magically charged owl-like creatures, often taking up residence in ancient ruins or magically powerful and important are areas, attended to by their children and others who wish to learn from them. 

Athente (Wings) Traits

The Athente are a people that live their best lives at dusk and in the dark. Though they might enjoy daylight, they are at their peak under the moon.

Age

Athente have total lifespans of roughly 300 to 400 years. They become recognized adults around 30 years old when their wings have developed enough to let them fly and join their brethren that live higher up in their ancient forests. The first 200 years of their lives are often spent traveling, experiencing, and learning, and having children of their own, before they anger the Elder stage of their lives where upon they have completely become Large owl-like creatures very unlike their children. 

Wings

When Athente reach a certain age of around 30, their wings have developed to be large and strong enough to allow them to fly, but at the same time their feet have changed to more bird-like forms that can make it hard for them to move very quickly. Athente with developed wings gain a flyspeed of 40 feet, and a movement speed of 20 feet. 

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by +1, and your Wisdom score increases by +2.

Languages

You can speak, read and write in common, one common language of your choice, and one rare language of your DMs choice. 

Darkvision

A creatures that primarily live in the dark, their eyes are uniquely situated for it. During the daytime and while flying they have transparent secondary eyelids under their regular ones, for protection. At night, they can see up to 120 feet in dim light and the dark. While in the dark they cannot discern colors, only shades of gray. 

Keen Senses

With excellent eyes and uniquely shaped inner ears, the Athente have proficiency in the Perception skill. 

Nocturnal Being

As a creature that is at its best in the dark, you gain advantage on stealth checks while in dim light or the dark.
