Homebrew Bear Folk Species Details

The hulking bearfolk are intimidating creatures. Brutish and powerful, they combine features of humanoid beings and bears. Their heads are ursine with heavy jaws and sharp teeth. Dark fur covers their bodies, which are packed with muscle. Adult bearfolk stand at least 7 feet tall and weigh more than 600 pounds.

Bear Folk Traits

Your bearfolk character has the following racial traits.

Powerful Build

You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

Primal Rush

Your natural ability allows you to store up energy for when  you need to move with a burst of speed. When you move on your turn in combat, you can double your speed until the end of the turn. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Bear Claws

Your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Dexterity modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Ursine Heritage

You have advantage on animal handling when interacting with medium and large unaligned beasts.

Keen Smell

The bear folk has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Dexterity score increases by 1.

Age

Bearfolk reach adulthood at age 12 and live up to 50 years.

Alignment

Bearfolk can be boisterous and jovial, the bearfolk are people of extremes. They celebrate with great passion and are quick to explosive anger. Settling differences with wrestling matches that leave permanent scars is common, as is seeing two bloodied bearfolk sharing a cask of mead and a raucous song after such a scuffle. They tend to be chaotic good.

Size

Bugbears are between 6 and 7 feet tall and weigh between 250 and 350 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common.
