Homebrew Dark Fae Species Details

Dark Fae are a subclass of Fairy, which are very reclusive in nature. They are humanoid, varying sizes anywhere between 5’5-6’3 fully grown, large leathered and feathered wings outstretched behind them. Their color pattern is heavily influenced by the type of bird they are classed with, and where they live. The four main groups of Dark Fae are Jungle, Forest, Desert, and Tundra.

Forest Fae:
These fae originally occupied forests around the world, in every continent. They are the most self reliant of the Dark Fae group, needing little to no help from outside clans. They mainly stay together, though they can live on their own, they prefer to live in their own flocks and pods.

Examples of Forest dwelling Dark Fae include Barn Owls, Downy Woodpeckers, Rusty Blackbirds, Greater Scaup, Mallard Ducks, Wilson’s Warblers, Common Loons, Connecticut Warblers, Broad-Winged Hawks, American Widgeons, any variation of Hummingbird, and Red Tailed Hawks.

Forest Fae immediately get a +3 in intelligence, +1 in strength, and, depending on the breed of bird (Woodpeckers, Blackbirds, Ducks, Hawks, Hummingbird), +2 in flight speed automatically added to their status.

Jungle Fae:
These Fae are originally from tropical jungles found in the hotter parts of the world. They are the most musically and arts endowed of the Dark Fae, living out their lives in troupes of actors or musicians. They are extremely reliant on other Fae beings, no matter what type of Fae accompanies them.

Examples of Jungle dwelling Fae include Toucans, Hornbills, Parrots, Macaws, Lovebirds, Parakeets, and Philippine Eagles. Some non flying examples are Cassowaries. The most common Jungle Fae you can run into are Parrots and Macaws, others being hunted almost out of extinction by other races, most of which are human. There are some organizations that help in the conservation of these Fae, and will stop at nothing to get the population back up, and in turn, there are groups and organizations that strive to hunt them to extinction due to the oils in their feathers and the color in them, the best to make potions and spells. The bones of the Jungle Fae are used to make dark magic potions. It is currently illegal to trap and sell Jungle Fae in any region by any race.

Jungle Fae immediately get a +2 in acrobatics, a +2 in charisma, and a +3 in nature. No added modifier to their flying speed.

Tundra Fae:
These Fae are the most rare, residing in barren tundra in only the coldest parts of the world. They are the most resilient of all of the Fae, living in climates that most creatures would freeze to death in. They are strictly solitary fae, only seeing one another as they mate, raise chicks, and part ways. They have the most fat of any of the Fae, using it to keep warm in the frigid harshness of their environment. You will not find any skinny Tundra Fae unless they are dead or living in a warmer climate than their ancestors.

Examples of Tundra dwelling Fae include Red and White-winged Crossbills, Northern Goshawks, Snow Buntings, Lapland Longspurs, Snow Geese, Bohemian Waxwings, Snowy Owls, and Rosy-Finches.

Tundra Fae immediately get a +3 in survival and a -2 in charisma.

Desert Fae:
Desert Fae are the most sociable of the Dark Fae, living in large colonies around the world. They live in the warmest climates in the world, but some can live and come from anywhere. It does not matter which group of Dark Fae you come from. If you are adopted in by a large colony of Desert Fae, you are a Desert Fae. They are the most diverse of the four groups, and the most abundant around the world, able to live in any climate.

Examples of Desert Fae are Cactus Wrens, Lucifer Hummingbirds, Greater Roadrunners, Verdins, Indigo Buntings, Gila Woodpeckers, Hwameis, Ferruginous Pygmy Owls, Rosy-faced Lovebirds, Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Burrowing Owls, Black-necked Cranes, Red-crowned Cranes, and Peregrine Falcons.

Desert Fae get a +3 in insight, +4 in medicine, and a -3 in intimidation.
