Homebrew Canis Species Details

The Canis have long been whispered about in lore, "The Three Little Pigs," "Little Red Riding Hood," "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," ect. They are a solitary race usually letting the world shape them into who they will become. Sometimes being confused with "werewolves" the Canis are treated harshly by the world, which in turn tends the shape there personalities aa taking what you can before someone takes from you.   

Canis Traits

Your Canis character has the following traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength or Dexterity score increases by 2.

Age

Canis are quick to mature both physically and emotionally, reaching young adulthood at age 10. They rarely live to be more than 70 years old.

Alignment

Canis tend toward neutrality, being more focused on survival than concepts of good and evil. A love of personal freedom can drive canis toward chaotic alignments.

Size

Canis range from 5 to almost 7 feet tall, depending on their subrace. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet and you have a 5 foot burrowing speed

Darkvision

You have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Animal Instincts

You have proficiency with the Perception and the Stealth skill.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one language of your choice.

Frightful Howl

Once per short rest, they may use an action to use Frightful Howl - Every enemy within 30 feet of the Canis that can hear it must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of the Canis next turn. A target that successfully saves is immune to the baying of all the Canis bays for the next 24 hours.  DC equals 8 plus your proficiently bonus plus your Wisdom modifier 

Ability Score Increase

Your Wisdom score increases by 1 

Natural Weapon

Because your claws are natural weapons you can use them to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
