Homebrew Vampire Species Details

Vampires are nearly as old as the races, if not older. Evolved predators that feed on the life of others.

Creating Your Character

At 1st level, you choose whether your character is a member of the human race or of a fantastical race. If you select a fantastical race, follow these additional rules during character creation.

Ability Score Increases

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.

Languages

Your character can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character. The Players Handbook offers a list of languages to choose from. The DM is free to modify that list for a campaign.

Creature Type

For the purposes of all spells beyond healing, you are considered Undead.

Life Span

You can live forever, given you find the blood to sustain yourself

Height and Weight

Player characters, regardless of race, typically fall into the same ranges of height and weight that humans have in our world. If you’d like to determine your character’s height or weight randomly, consult the Random Height and Weight table in the Player's handbook, and choose the row in the table that best represents the build you imagine for your character.

Vampire Traits

As a vampire, you have the following weaknesses and strengths:

Sunlight Sensitivity

You have disadvantage on all perception checks and attacks while in direct sunlight.

Superior Darkvision

You have superior darkvision of 60 feet, allowing you to see in dim light and darkness as if it were bright light.

Ability Score Increase

You can increase ability scores, either two with +2 and +1, or 3 by +1.

Climb or Flight speed

You either have a flying speed or a spider climb equal to your walking speed.

Innate Spellcasting

Starting at level 1, you may cast False Life on yourself at 1st level. Once you reach level 3, you gain access to Flock of Familiars, which can only be used to summon bats. Finally, once reaching 5th level, you may cast gaseous form (self only) once per long rest. You'll have to add flock of familiars yourself, as it cannot be published with it.

Creature Type

You are Undead, for the purpose of all spells other than healing.

Vampiric Bite

Your vampiric bite is a natural weapon, which counts as a simple melee weapon with which you are proficient. You add your constitution instead of strength to the attack and damage rolls when you attack with this bite. While you are missing half or more of your hit points, you have advantage on attack rolls you make with this bite. When you attack with this bite and hit a creature that isn't a Construct or an Undead, you regain hitpoints equal to the damage dealt. This bite has a number of uses equal to your proficiency bonus, expending a use upon hitting a creature.
