Homebrew Death Knight Species Details

Description:

(Warning: This race is not entirely balanced with the other races, it is a bit more powerful than most Wizard of the Coast races and was intended as a late game/ high level reward!)

None can win the war with death but losing the war does not mean the combatants have seen their last battle...
Warriors who wish to fight beyond the limitations of flesh and blood can seek a forbidden way to steal their souls from fate. The cost of this immortality is death but the fearless few who pay this price become deaths allies. Indeed death bestows power upon them. Their fleshless bones clad in skins of armor. Their brittle fingers clasping weapons with a grip of iron. These knights of death take command of their souls and their destinies. When they charge from the shadowy afterlife into the lands of the living, Death Knights ride to wage war upon life itself. - Rhexx, Scholar of Monsters

When a paladin that falls from grace dies without seeking atonement, dark powers can transform the once-mortal knight into a hateful undead creature. A death knight is a skeletal warrior clad in fearsome plate armor. Beneath its helmet, one can see the knight’s skull with malevolent pinpoints of light burning in its eye sockets.

The resurrected may keep their stats and proficiencies they had in life. They are still able to speak the languages they had knowledge of during their lifetime but they gain the ability to speak abyssal additionally. They are also as capable as any other race to learn languages and adopt new proficiencies as long as their undead nature doesn't hinder them from doing so.

Death Knight Traits

(Like a knight but cooler A Death Knight.)

Already dead.

As an undead you are immune to necrotic and poison damage as you lack the (living) flesh to be affected by either.

Undead Nature

The dead do not require air for they have no lungs. The dead do not require drink for they have no blood. The dead do not require sleep for they have no muscles. The dead do not require food for they have only eternal unquenchable hunger left.

Darkvision

Death Knights have magical eye-sight allowing them to see in the dark. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Magic Resistance

To be resurrected as a Death Knight vast magical rituals, the laying of a powerful curse or some terrible transgression has to be performed. The powerful fate which keeps the Death Knight from eternal salvation or doom wards against magic. The Death Knight has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Eldritch Power

The death knight retains the ability to cast divine spells. However, no death knight can use its magic to heal. A death knight also attracts and commands lesser undead, although death knights that serve powerful fiends might have fiendish followers instead. Death knights often use warhorse skeletons and nightmares as mounts.

The Death Knight can summon or take control of undead (or when serving a fiendish master fiends) up to a CR equal to the Death Knights level divided by four.
The Death Knight can control an amount of creatures equal to a combined CR* of twice the Death Knights level.

*combined meaning the sum of all creatures CR added together, if the death knights mount is a nightmare, a warhorse skeleton or similar its CR is excluded from the calculation

Immortal Until Redeemed

A Death Knight can arise anew even after it has been destroyed. Only when it atones for a life of wickedness, finds redemption, lifts its curse or similar can it finally escape its undead purgatory and truly perish. This process may take days to millenia depending on how strong the Death Knights connection is to the realm of the living or what the conditions of his original resurrection were. Magic could also hasten or delay this progress.
