Homebrew Deku Scrubs Species Details
Tribal, territorial and frequently irate, deku scrubs descend
from the great Deku Trees of old, recognizable by their stout
bodies and heads adorned with voluminous leaves. They are
quick-talking, argumentative, and as shrewd of negotiators
and bargainers as anyone in Hyrule's markets can attest.
Their music is loud, their speech is without subtlety, and their
humor is often pointed at others' expense. But beneath their
coarse exteriors are guileless hearts full of loyalty and a strict
sense of honor and justice. Deku scrubs aren't the friendliest
denizens of Hyrule, but they are filled with a love for both
nature and people alike and are trustworthy as any can be.
Monarchy at Spearpoint
When it comes to power, deku scrub society settle for no less
than supreme executive authority. Each tribe is a kingdom in
its own right, with a Deku King rising to the top. While the
Deku King's progeny maintains access to the throne, that is
not to say that deku scrubs blindly follow whoever sits upon
it. If a deku scrub feels that their leader is unfit to rule, they
will often partake in civil revolution until a better king takes
the throne and his children continue the line of succession.
They admire traits such as decisiveness, honor, and volume
in their kings, and loyally follow those who with such traits.
Conformity and Uniformity
Conformity and uniformity are a highly valued part of deku
scrub society, and are enforced within every aspect of their
lives to the point that no deku has what other societies would
call a name, from the lowly citizens to the highest king. They
simply use titles to refer to one another, as well as honorific
speech that denotes exactly how one relates to the speaker.
This devotion to uniformity comes from their belief, that they
are each part of a great, ancient Deku Tree that sired each
and every plant that bears the name Deku. As they are all of
one origin, so too are they one in body and spirit, and it is in
devotion to uniformity that they honor this fact. All are Deku,
thus, all are one and equal to each other. To reject this and to
stand apart as an individual is to be haughty and heretical to
deku culture itself, and to be labeled a mad scrub and exiled.
Business in Hyrule
Deku scrubs are a simple people who live without need of any
more than water, light, and a home to live in. But having met
with the industrious people outside of their homes, they have
become interested in their ways of life, and particularly with
the concept of commerce and its fixation on useless things
like gold and rupees. They eagerly participate in this dance
with other races, and have gained a reputation for bearing
both shrewd business acumen and amazing stubbornness.
Business scrubs can be seen coming in and out of towns,
villages and cities all over, proudly displaying their wares.
What they do with all of their money is rarely seen by others
as they mostly save it or take it home, but since other people
like money so much, it can't hurt to have more of it, right?
Adventuring Scrubs
Deku scrubs, with such dedication toward their own people
and culture, rarely leave home for a life of adventuring and
trouble-making. "Such things are better left to the tall ones,"
is the common line of thought. And yet, a deku scrub may find
itself wanting to see the world beyond the marshes, to see the
cities and meet the people of the world. They may be exiled
from home as a mad scrub, seeking a new place to belong
altogether. Whatever their reason is, a deku scrub may find
themselves with enough ability to face what danger awaits,
along with new perspectives to temper their own against.
Deku Scrub Names
The concept of names are foreign to deku scrubs. As they see
themselves as part of the same whole as other scrubs, they
see no need to differentiate themselves with names. A deku
scrub need only have a title befitting their career or personal
interests, such as Business Scrub or Magic Scrub. As such,
you may name yourself after anything you desire, from your
chosen class, interest or background. Only nobility or those of
similarly high status tend to use the Deku as a prefix instead
as part of their titles, such as Deku King, Deku Princess, or
even Deku Butler as a direct subordinate to the Deku King.
