Homebrew Clayborn Species Details

Clayborns are a fairly unknown and mysterious race. They are small constructs formed of clay and happiness.

Smurftastic

All clayborns look nearly identical. However when you get to know them, each one has it's own defining trait. They are usually about 6 inches tall, but being made of malleable clay makes defining their features impossible. They live around 13 years, at which they mature and then immediately die. The leader of the village will not die, and will live until "convinced" otherwise.

FRIENDS

Clayborns are innocent beings and rarely see anybody else as anything other than a friend.

Dwarves. “The last time a dwarf saw me he tried to teach me blacksmithing. Ask his missing toe how that went.”

Elves. “He put me in a cage and asked me to dance.”

Halflings. “I mistook one for my cousin. Didn't go well.”

Close To Home

Maturing 5 seconds before death means that there aren't many clayborn adventurers. Usually only groups of 3 or more will leave the village at once. The village leader does what they want.

Sculpting

Clayborns are formed from natural clay by the village leader. There are legends of the Everclay, a ball of clay that could create Clayborns without ever running out. Finding the Everclay could be your character's motivation for leaving the safety and purity of their village.

One Trick Pony

All clayborns are defined by one trait until maturing. These traits will usually be their names as well. A happy clayborn will be named Happy. A clumsy one will be Clumsy. Occasionally there will be a Grumpy or Sad. These names have no limits either. There could be a Wacky or an Ambidextrous or a Gambler or a Depressed or an Alcoholic.

Clayborn Traits

Essentially a living ball of play dough, you have these traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Con, Dex, and Cha scores each increase by 2

Age

Clayborns mature and die around 13, however village leaders do not die of age.

Size

Clayborns are rarely over 6 inches tall, making them tiny.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 35 feet. And your burrowing speed is 5 feet. You cannot swim.

Malleable

Being made of clay allows a lot of creative space. You gain resistance to bludgeoning, slashing and piercing, damage, and depending on what your DM allows, you can change the shape of your body to your liking.

Languages

You can speak Common as well as Claymish, which is gibberish that other earth based creatures can understand, and sometimes speak.

Harden

You can harden your body for 1 level of exhaustion every 2 rounds and cannot harden again until a short rest. Hardening makes you vulnerable to bludgeoning, but grants immunity to cold and fire damage, and raises your AC by 2. Coming in contact with water will unharden you.

Clay

Being clay means that you don't have to eat or breathe. You cannot swim and will sink, however you can peacefully exist at the bottom of a body of water with no issues. You must come in contact with water once every 2 days or you will be petrified until you are soaked in water again. You are also vulnerable to fire damage.
