Homebrew Caymaphore Species Details

Haughty cousins of dragons. Many of the rumors and stories of dragons being petty, hoarding piles of gold and treasure, and demanding human sacrifice come from Caymaphores. These creatures are spindly and small when compared to a true dragon, but due to their rarity most common folk wouldn’t know the difference. Caymaphores tend towards obsessive behaviors and usually have a very high opinion of themselves. This compels most towards solitary lifestyles, but some few remain tolerably sociable, to the point that some dragons who maintain “courts” will have a few, conniving about, gossiping, hinting at devious power plays or other such nonsense. More commonly, though still rare, some Caymaphores obsessions draw them to humanoid societies, usually large cities where they can find a plethora of material things, people to be impressed by them, library’s, and should they have the knack for it, work. To their advantage, Caymaphores can polymorph themselves, though unlike the more powerful dragon, they have a single form they take when they polymorph. This polymorphed form is a humanoid, which aids greatly in acclimatizing to the most populous species in the world.

Interestingly, Caymaphore have no trouble breeding with most humanoids. Their blood is inherently more powerful so a union of this type will always result in another Caymaphore. Weirdly, humanoids, which famously rarely lay eggs, will lay an egg if they conceive with a Caymaphore. Though usually lacking the instinctual egg rearing mentality, the egg will usually perish unless the Caymaphore parent remains to help with the incubation. All of this has led those who study such things to wonder at the significance of the polymorph magic of Caymaphores and just who they’re more closely related to

Caymaphore Traits

Your draconic heritage manifests in a variety of traits you share with other caymaphores.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.

Age

Young Caymaphore grow relatively slowly. They walk on all fours hours after hatching, attain their characteristic upright posture and flight by the age of 5. They reach adulthood around the age of 20. They can live up to 275 years or so.

Size

Caymaphore are spindly and long compared to humans, though they stand at ease with their limbs pulled in close. They stand comfortably at around 8 ft. tall, but can stretch neck and legs to easily reach 12 ft.
you are medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

You have a flying speed of 30 feet when not over encumbered or wearing medium or heavy armor.

Draconic Element

You, like many dragons, are able to spew a weaponized “breath” from your mouth. Choose fire, cold, poison, acid, or lightning. You can release a 5 by 30 ft. line of this element from your mouth.

Breath Weapon

You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your Draconic Element determines the damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic element. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all expended charges at the end of a long rest.

Spindly Build

Your long limbs rest comfortably when tucked in near your torso, belying their reach. When you make a melee attack, your reach is 10 ft.

Winged Flight

your wings grant you a flight speed of 30 ft. so long as you are not over encumbered and are not wearing medium or heavy armor.

Humanoid Form

You were born with the innate ability to take a humanoid form. It can be any of the common humanoid races and it’s appearance is up to you. If you have any Humanoid heritage, this form will likely take after them. You cannot change this form, though it will age and show scars as appropriate. You can take this form as an action. When you take this form your stats and features remain the same with the exception of the spindly build and flight features, which you lose access to. Spells that would detect shape-changers or dragons will be able to affect you while in this form, though it is not an effect that can be dispelled by Dispel Magic or an anti-magic field.

Obsession

Choose one tool, instrument, or gaming set. You have expertise when making checks related to the chosen item.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants.
