Homebrew Viera Species Details
The viera may begin as part of the Wood,
but the Wood is not the only end that we may choose.
- Fran, Weaponmaster Viera
Originally a particular bred of demi-fae engineered for pleasure and subservience, viera are a predominately female race of lepimorphic humanoids with only one in ten born male. The males tend to be somewhat brawnier and more aggressive than the females, but both sexes have the slim, long-limbed elegance classical of elves and the fae from which they descended, and soft, leporine features. Although they rarely travel outside of their forests, some never leaving in their three hundred year or more lifespans, viera make excellent scouts and guides, forming temporary but fierce loyalties with the parties with whom they bond.
Engineered for Loveliness
Tall and graceful, viera have soft, furred ears that stand upright on their heads, and warm, angled features that belie the sharp claw-like nails on their hands. Their hind quarters from their waist to their feet are also covered in soft, fine fur that ranges in all shades of white, brown, and even red-tinted auburn. Like satyrs, viera are digitigrade and have relatively long carpals and tarsals, which place their "ankle" higher than a human and give them the appearance of consistently walking on their toes. Their feet are more animal than human, padded and suited for walking through difficult terrain. Because of the shape of their feet and the musculature of their legs, viera make excellent jumpers, and many walk barefoot or wear fine, stiletto heels to even their walking.
Most strikingly, whatever the color of their fur, all viera have pristine, pearlescent hair. Those that live among other races may dye their hair to match, but it is often seen as taboo and unclean to dye one's fur. Their eyes may be either brown, topaz, sky blue, or, rarely, a pale pink or rose red. A variant of viera known as Feol Viera, descended from a cross-breeding of viera and aasimar long ago, has bright blond hair, shorter ears, and pink eyes without exception. Save for the Feol variants, most pink-eyed viera have poorer eyesight, particularly in bright light, though this often just places them in the same respect as an average human.
Separate and Sanctified
Due to the abuse suffered in their past as slaves and servants, viera live separated from the world at large, preferring the company of elves or druids if they do travel and refusing to aid any who either directly or indirectly harms nature. Most viera live in forests which they hold sacred, and which they do not leave except by necessity. This is a law known as The Green Word, the breaking of which leads to excommunication from the rest of viera society. Adventuring viera may be such expatriates, or they may be refugees, pilgrims, or guides. Such viera must return to their forest and maintain no home outside of the Wood, lest their temporary separation become permanent. Feol Viera, by their nature, are exiles of viera society and are scorned by their forest-born brethren. Feol Viera do not abide by The Green Word but still prefer viera company to all others, though they tend to be more social urbanites.
Male and female viera live separately even from each other due to their temperament, meeting only for necesary exchanges, reproduction, and times of crisis. Viera do not form romantic relationships often and have a loose view of physical intimacy as a biological itch and a necessity for species reproduction. From their past as pleasure slaves, viera are excellent lovers but are loathe to physical contact that they do not initiate.
All viera undergo self-defense and hunting training at a young age, and many make excellent hunters or rangers. Some go on to train with the druids, but fewer than one in a hundred will choose the path of magic, often as an oracle, cleric, or summoners, regarded simultaneously as holy and as a pariah within their societies. Viera are sensitive to magic and aether, and can enter a berserking rage strong enough to tear armored humans apart with their claws if they are overexposed, so few dare take the risk. Viera who expose themselves, moreover, tend to have drastically reduced lifespans and often only live to the age of an average human (70-80yrs) rather than their normal lifespan of nearly 250-300 years.
Viera Names
At birth, a Viera Soul-Seer will commune with the spirits of the child's ancestors and see into their future. Upon discovering what the child will become, the Soul-Seer grants her a name appropriate to the seen future. Such names may translate into Common as "Forest Protector," "Nature Speaker," "Love Binder," and "Bow Master," as examples. Like fae, viera guard their true names carefully and often give these names in Common or take a nature related pseudonym when traveling with non-viera. A viera that has been excommunicated or who has lost her place in vieran society is no longer considered a viera at all and is stripped of her proper name.
Male: Walu, Jorit, Noel
Female: Glinta, Ney, Koteni
Viera Traits
Delicate and gentle though they may seem, Viera are hardly so timorous as their animal likeness, and they will defend their Wood and their clan at whatever cost.Ability Score Increase
Nimble masters of wood and wild, Viera gain +2 DEX and +2 WIS.
Age
Viera live approximately three times the lifespan of humans.
Alignment
Viera are usually good, but not often lawful or chaotic. Rare cases of evil viera are usually found in males, as they are far more aggressive and prone to ill thought and corruption, but such extreme alignments are often the result of violent or terrible events in life.
Size
Viera average 5'6" to 6'6" in height. Taking into consideration their long ears and stilettos, most viera are between 6 to 7 feet tall but are still classed as Medium creatures.
Speed
Despite their long legs, the base walking speed for viera is 30 feet. However, instead of twice their normal speed, viera can sprint up to 2.5x their move speed and jump upwards of ten feet directly up. They add +5 to all Long and High jump checks.
Darkvision
The eyes of viera are accustomed to the dim light of the Wood. They can see in dim light within 60 ft as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light, though they cannot discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. Viera with pink eyes are extraordinarily light sensitive, but add 30ft visibility in all conditions.
Heightened Senses
With their exceptionally sensitive ears, viera have proficiency with the perception skill and advantage in checks that involve hearing.
Languages
All viera start play knowing Common and Vieran , a native language descended from Sylvan and Elvish. Viera that have high intelligence can choose from Elvish, Sylvan, Aklo, Gnomish, Orc, Terran, Auran, Celestial, and Draconic.
Viera Finesse
In addition to any class proficiency, vera have proficiency with the shortbow, longbow, light crossbow, heavy crossbow, rapier, longsword, and katana. Many viera choose the way of the arrow, but a choice few take the path of the blade.
Fey Ancestry
With sylvan blood in their veins, viera have advantage on saving throws against charm and cannot be put to sleep by magical means.
Trance
Like elves, viera do not need sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply for 4 hours a day, during which they can dream, in a sense, but are fully aware.
Vieran Magic
All viera know the Guidance cantrip and can cast Speak with Animals at will. At 4th level, they can cast the Conjure Animals spell once per day using their Wisdom as the spellcasting ability.
Sensitive to Magic
An unfortunate side effect of the breeding process that created them, though some speculate that the effect was intentional to prevent an uprising, viera are extremely sensitive to magic. They are able to sense the presence or absence of magical auras, as a weak detect magic, but when they have taken any magic damage since the beginning of their last turn, viera must make a WIS save to prevent themselves from going into a magic induced rage (DC 10, 13 if HP is below half). On a failed save, the viera must move directly towards the nearest creature and Attack. IF there is more than one target, the DM chooses the target. Their turn then immediately ends and they regain control.

Posted Dec 30, 2019I love this! I made a character named Angel of the Forrest (or Thistle) & I based her appearance on my pet bunny. Now I have to make a second one for my new bunny! Thank you!

Posted Jun 19, 2022It is a really nice race, but there are some minor quirks. For some reason in DnD beyond, it gives me advantage on all skill checks, instead of ones like perception, investigation, and maybe survival and nature checks too. Also on the side bar, it says advantage on all healing checks. I'm assuming it means hearing checks.
P.S. Under Darkvision, why does it give me the option for "multiple choices" when there are just one??
