Homebrew Angelkin Species Details

Displaced from an unknown home world that no longer exists, Angelkin travel the spheres and find themselves as refugees wherever they land. Depending on the common beliefs of the land the Angelkin arrive in, they can often be seen as a blessing or a curse. Some believe them to be true angels, venerating or even worshipping them as such. Others, however, see them less favourably. Some are jealous of the Angelkin's seeming immortality and ability to fly, others still see them as simple nuisances, like unwanted guests who take up resources and space.

Despite their appearance, Angelkin have no celestial heritage. Some chose to act as servants of gods however, for good or ill intent.

Winged Beauties

The Angelkin appear much like humans do, with a wide variety of skin, hair and eye colours. This is where the similarities end, however. Two feathered wings sprout from the backs of Angelkin, usually in shades of white, black, or grey.

Angelkin are often very aesthetically pleasing to the eyes of humanoid races. They tend to be quite tall, averaging between 6-7 feet when fully grown. Their features are well-defined, and they tend to have lean bodies to accommodate their large wings, and the ability to fly.

The Power of Angels

Despite lacking any celestial heritage, Angelkin can fly and live indefinitely, provided they have access to Eternim - a magical substance from their lost home world. The refugees who land in new worlds often have a limited supply of Eternim, which they ration amongst the community for as long as possible.

One of the key goals of any Angelkin community is to find a suitable replacement for Eternim to continue their immortal existence. For some this means searching for a new magical substance that provides the same benefit, for others, it means trying to replicate the effects through magic or alchemy.

Those who have the blessing to leave an Angelkin community are often given a supply of Eternim to carry with them, but must return frequently to restock, otherwise risk losing their ability to fly.

A Place to Stay

The homeland of Angelkin is unknown. It is said that the forgotten world of these folk was destroyed in a great conflict, with only an estimated 30% of the population escaping into wildspace.

Some may find a home amongst the stars, but most of these refugees travel wildspace looking for a new world to settle on. These Angelkin seek out magic-rich worlds, in the hopes of finding Eternim, or a way of replicating the substance.

A typical community of Angelkin will have at least one powerful wizard, known as a Prime Monitor. The Prime Monitor will have been responsible for operating and directing the Spelljammer ship carrying the refugees, and ultimately is responsible for where the community settles. The rest of the Angelkin community will be made up of folk from all backgrounds, including warriors, farmers, tailors, smiths, and so on.

ANGELKIN IN EKINA

The Angelkin arrived in Ekina in the year 1852 KCB, landing in Kureta by Spacejammer ship. Many saw their arrival as the herald of some new or returned deity, but over the years, this idea quickly dissolved.

The Angelkin were granted land by Queen Irena Orbeck and allowed to build a settlement along the Capitis River. This town became known as "Angeltaun" before a true name could be appointed, and it has since stuck.

After only a few years on Ekina, the Angelkin community was cordoned off, due to a clear issue with its residents - they were dependant on a magical substance from their home world to keep them alive, and the reserves they came with were quickly being depleted. Citizens of Angeltaun became aggressive and hostile towards outsiders, and for everyone's safety, it was decided to keep the Angelkin separated.

Scholars both within and outside of the Angelkin community work to find an alternative to the magical substance that sustains Angelkins' immortality, but efforts have been fruitless thus far.

Finding Purpose

For many Angelkin, the prospect of a regular lifespan is quite troubling. Some may embrace that they will one day die and seek to live a life full of adventure and great experiences. Others desperately cling to their immortality, living sheltered lives and rationing Eternim as thinly as possible.

For adventuring Angelkin, a common goal may be to find something to replace Eternim - perhaps at the behest of the Grand Monitor, or for one's own glory. Others may simply wish to experience a rich life, explore the new world they now inhabit, and find an end to life of their own choosing.
