Homebrew Bralani Species Details
You are descended from the Bralani. They are celestial fey beings; a mixture of the two heritages that bred good-natured chaos. They once resided in the outer planes but occasionally made their way to the Material Plane for research and exploration. It was rare to meet one but is even more rare to be the descendent of one, as they did not typically become close with the races of the Prime Material. No one has seen a Bralani in ages and it would take a special event to awaken this heritage; perhaps a ritual, a cataclysm, or the joining of an aasimar and a fey being in your ancestry. However it happened, you can feel the pride of your lineage coursing through you. You know you are meant to do great things, be a force for good, in order to live up to your ancestors' reputations.
Celestial Guides
A bralani has a profound connection with a celestial guide. This being is typically either someone who shares their celestial heritage (a wizened aasimar, a deva, an avatar of a particular deity, or someone similar) or someone who has a deep connection within their familial ancestry (a member of, or a friend of, their family from many generations prior). This guide can be present from birth or appear later in life when they are needed most. This being provides guidance to the bralani, though this connection functions mostly in dreams and in visions. The guidance is not a direct command or a direct path to the future. Instead, the bralani receives visions, prophecies, and feelings. These guides do their best to lead their bralani on path of goodness whenever possible, even if that leads them into danger or the unknown.
Their guide is not omniscient. Their guidance is based on their understanding of the world they see through the bralani, their previous worldly experiences, and, above all, what they believe is good and right. Depending on how they are connected to the bralani, they may even have insight on their ancestry, of secrets that need to be discovered, of problems that need to be solved.
Personality like the Seasons
While almost always aligned good like their celestial predecessors, the bralani has the ability to shift their view of the world based on what personal season they are currently in (Winter, Spring, Summer, or Autumn), like many fey creatures.
- Winter: The world becomes cold and life retreats. This is the season of introspection and melancholy.
- Spring: The world awakens and new life begins. This is the season of cheerfulness and excitement.
- Summer: is the season of boldness and assertion.
- Autumn: The harvest is done and the world is ready to rest. This is the season of contentment and goodwill towards all.
Similar to their eladrin brethren, bralani can change their season, should they choose. Some remain associated with a particular season for their entire lives while others might choose the season that is present in the world, or, even still, match their season to their current emotional state. Some may even choose to let chance choose their season (roll 1d4, the die result coinciding with the list above). Occasionally, at the DM's discretion, an event can have such a profound effect on the bralani that they instantaneously change season (professions of love, the death of a loved one, and so on).
Otherworldly Appearance
Bralani take on the physical traits and abilities of both sides of their ancestral heritage: the celestial and the fey. Like a celestial being, they have flawless skin, radiant hair, and shining eyes. But their appearance goes one step further, embodying their fey side with coloration to match their Seasons.
Typically, you will find them with partially metallic hair and eyes slightly glowing to complement. Examples include:
- A winter bralani with white and silver hair, almost opalescent in the light. His eyes are a glowing, icy blue. Porcelain skin and crystal clear of any blemish.
- Cool colors: icy blue, slate grey, white; Celestial influence: silver
- A spring bralani with light brown hair that has shocks of metallic rose gold throughout. Their eyes shining a bright, emerald green, skin looking slightly sun-kissed.
- Vibrant colors: spring green, coral pink, lavender; Celestial influence: rose gold
- A summer bralani with blonde hair and golden roots. Eyes a deep scarlet and skin tanned, like they've been in the sun for days on end.
- Warm colors: scarlet, dark orange, bright yellow; Celestial influence: yellow gold
- An autumn bralani with auburn hair, shining bronze highlighting it. Her eyes a deep amber and a sprinkling of bronze freckles across her nose and cheeks.
- Earth colors: brown, burnt orange, maroon; Celestial influence: bronze
The way an bralani look is a point of pride for them. They know that there is something strange and beautiful about them and they embrace it, many highlight it with face paints, makeup, or tattoos.
The Aging Process
Bralani are typically the result of an elven and celestial relationship. They reach maturity around the same time as other humanoids, around 20 years, however they have an expanded life of around 400 years. When born to non-bralani parents, which is almost all cases, bralani will often leave their homes and settle on a nomadic lifestyle to contend with the disparity in age between them and their loved ones, some even seeking out ways to change their lifespan.
