Homebrew Battle Automa Species Details

The Battle Automa were built for war.  There was a time that machines were of more value than that of flesh and blood.  Machines follow orders, they do not question, and they are exacting and precise with their actions.  Crafted with the upmost precision, the Battle Automa is a pristine collection of gears, cables, and liquified magical concoctions.

Forged in Fire

Battle Automa are formed from a blend of organic and inorganic materials. Steel cords infused with liquified magic and wrapped around a frame of metal make an imposing site. Armored plates form a protective outer shell and reinforce joints and they are designed in unique shapes to fit their primary goal.  Beyond these common elements of Battle Automa design, the precise materials and build of a Battle Automa vary based on their creator.

Battle Automa share traits with humanoids but are more Construct in nature. Resting and healing magic all provide the same benefits to Battle Automa that they do to other humanoids, but due to their complex design, performing a Medicine skill check is at Disadvantage.

Battle Automa Personality

The Battle Automa were built to serve and to fight. For most of their existence, Battle Automa had a clearly defined function and were told not to deviate from that mission.

The typical Battle Automa shows little emotion.  Battle Automa embrace their mission — such as protecting allies, assaulting an enemy, or guarding a location. Battle Automa do not delight in exploring their feelings, their freedom, and their relationships with others. Most Battle Automa have no interest in religion, but some embrace faith and mysticism, seeking higher purpose and deeper meaning.

Battle Automa have a sexless body shape and ignore the concept of gender entirely.

Battle Automa do not develop thier individuality, as this is not part of the mission.

Quirks

Battle Automa sometimes malfunction due to combat injuries which cause them to display an odd personality trait or two.. The Battle Automa Quirks table contains example quirks.

Battle Automa are not given names at creation but identifying numbers and letters.  Sometimes these letters and numbers form a phrase or a name of sort, but it is purely coincidental.

Battle Automa Traits

Your battle automa character has the following traits. A few of the traits give you a choice; consider how your choice reflects the purpose for which your character was built.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution score increases by 2, and one other ability score of your choice increases by 1.

Age

Battle Automa don't concern themselves with age, they only know what they are told and could be thousands of years old. Battle Automa have shown no signs of deterioration due to age. You are immune to magical aging effects.

Alignment

Battle Automa do not care about the wills of the people but in what their purpose is.  They are driven toward their purpose with little regard to what is right or wrong, as they have a mission to complete.  The Battle Automa's alignment is driven by it's mission, making it lean towards any alignment.

Size

Your size is Medium. To set your height and weight randomly, start with rolling a size modifier:

Size modifier = 2d6

Height = 5 feet + 10 inches + your size modifier in inches

Weight in pounds = 270 + (4 × your size modifier)

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Immaculate Design

You were created to have remarkable fortitude, represented by the following benefits:

  • You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
  • You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
  • You are immune to disease.
  • You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Power Down

When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.

Built for War

Your body has built-in defensive layers, which can be enhanced with armor:

  • You gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class.
  • You can don only armor with which you have proficiency. To don armor other than a shield, you must incorporate it into your body over the course of 1 hour, during which you remain in contact with the armor. To doff armor, you must spend 1 hour removing it. You can rest while donning or doffing armor in this way.
  • While you live, the armor incorporated into your body can’t be removed against your will.

Sole Creator

Your internal mechanisms are complex and difficult to understand to those outside of your creator.  Any character who attempts a Medicine skill check on you has Disadvantage on the check.  This Disadvantage does not apply on checks made on yourself as you understand your own components.

Unstable Circuitry

The Battle Automa is a well designed machine of war.  As such, a large stress to the system can cause unintended effects.   When a Battle Automa is critically hit, roll a D8.  Apply the following effect for 1d6 rounds:

1.)  Malfunction - Subtract 1d4 from your attack rolls.

2.) Dislodged Dirt - Advantage on Dexterity Saving Throws.

3.) Jammed Gears - Movement Speed reduced by 20.

4.) Fluid Surge - Advantage on the first Attack Roll each turn.

5.)  Broken Sprocket - Disadvantage on all Dexterity Checks and Saving Throws.

6.) Fully Tuned - Add +2 to your Damage Rolls.

7.) Severed Connection - Make an attack against all creatures within 5ft.

8.) Full Alignment - Gain the effects of Haste.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.
