Homebrew Allayi Species Details
The Allayi are the oldest sentient beings on Auriga next to the Guardians who were created when the planet was formed. They were decimated when the Endless invaded during the Dust War and were forced to flee to the cold fringes of the planet, only having returned to the central regions of the planet in the past few years. With them they brought the Skyfins, beautiful creatures seen as good omens across Auriga The thousands of years of isolation from all other sentient life on Auriga has changed their society into a secluded one that greatly discourages their kind from leaving their communities and their race. They are attuned to the planet Auriga to a symbiotic level, reading her like a book, loving her like a mother, mimicking her like a mirror. Every couple of months when the planet switches from summer to winter the Allayi change with it, every thing from the colour of their fur to the opinions of their community shifts just as drastically as the planet they worship. All of this combines into a race that most find mysterious and awe inspiring, and even amongst those that see them as over zealous fools they are respected and feared for their graceful skill and unflinching wrath against any who harm their mother Auriga.
Strange And Majestic
It is very hard to come up with words that describe an Allayi. Strange or weird comes to mind first which fits since they look radically different from all other species on Auriga, but they are so wondrous and majestic that strange doesn't seem to fit, but yet their look is so jarring and bizarre that pretty words like that don't match either. It is only when a storm of them ride the winds over you, their magnificent Skyfins soaring beside them that a almost perfect word comes to mind: Awe.
Allayi stand out in a number of ways. Firstly their appearance is a strange mismatch. Their arms look just like humans but their legs are double jointed and dog like. Female Allayi have very human chests whilst males although physically human like are covered in a incredibly thick layer of fur. Their heads look just like a bats, but they have small upwards curling horns just bellow their ears and their faces are pulled down twice as far as a bats. This odd form is far less strange then their wings how ever. Each Allayi has three sets of angular shapes hover on either side of their torso, at an Allayi's birth they are stuck to their body but quickly float away and stay separated from them and refuse to ever touch their body as if held apart by some immense magnetic force. This feature has puzzled scientists for years but so far no explanation has been reached, not that the Allayi seek an explanation as they simply believe that Mother Auriga had a reason for making them like this.
Although not as obviously strange the Allayi's colour scheme is equal strange as the rest of them. Their fur is always white and stays the same colour all across their body. They do have markings on a third of the edges on each of their wings and a few extra markings on their head, limbs, and chest. These are even more striking as they are bright orange. During winter however this colour changes completely, their white coat become completely black and their markings turn light blue. This strangeness has lead some people and even some minor nations to see the Allayi as magical, a higher level of being then the rest of Auriga.
Despite their shockingly unique appearance Allayi have very plain ascetic clothing and designs both for their buildings and tools/weapons. Their colour schemes are a mix of whites and blacks and use simple shapes that most other races would find odd.
Mother Auriga
Allayi society revolves entirely around Auriga. Their spiritual leaders hold great positions of power in their society and all leaders are expected to be able to quote their holly text the Epistle, their rite of passage into adult hood revolves around the changing of the seasons, and all Allayi are expected to fight to the death if Auriga is threatened. No matter what way an Allayi chooses to live their life their love and respect for Auriga will always remain a large part of them.
Thousands of years living in the frozen edges of Auriga surrounded by other just as desperate tribes has created a strong branch of hunters and warriors in Allayi society, this section of their society grows much larger during winter as the Allayi's mind's change with Auriga. During summer the Allayi are very defensive and economically minded, reacting strongly to any amount of harm, damage, or loss of productivity amongst their people. But come winter they shift to become aggressive and daring eager to take action and achieve greatness. Both Allayi and other races use this predictable mental shift to their advantage, but they are still a society of Individuals so this change in opinion can be fought against or embraced in unexpected ways.
Living Myths
With a mix of a profoundly different and awe inspiring appearance, a powerful constant message of devotion to the beautiful planet of Auriga, and a strong maternal like connection to the mythic and beautiful Skyfin has garnered the Allayi a reputation of being magical beings above all other races of Auriga. The Skyfin is a strange but majestic creature who through out all cultures is seen as an omen of good will, and thus any aggression or violence made against one is condemned by virtually every nation and faction. The Allayi embrace this idea as they see themselves as the most significant race on the planet, using the metric of who has the stronger connection and respect for Auriga. Although this opinion is usually only held by minor factions, tribes, and the general public of poorer areas there are a number of incredibly powerful, skilled, learned people who hold a almost religious reverence for the Allayi.
Allayi Names
First names are given the same as other nations but their last names called 'Winter Names' are unique. Allayi are born in broods from eggs and thus entire generations grow up and mature at the same time. During the first winter after they mature at the age of 14 they start joining in hunts and raids, during which they are given winter names which are based around great feats in comparison to their pears. The first part is the feat say being good with spears earns the name Heartstriker, or someone that found large amounts of berries when their group was starving would have the name Swiftforager, although they aren't just for flashy things like fighting or hunting, winter names can be given for bandaging wounds well, befriending animals easily, and many other things. The next part is the location this feat took place in, such as Greyback mountain would give the name Greyback.
