Homebrew Araneae-Born Species Details

Araneae-Born

Pure Araneae-Born are commonly found to be brought into existence when a human is given the grace or is cursed with the power of a spider goddess. This curse or blessing can be brought on in many ways, such as a human child accidentally or purposely killing a large amount of spiders, or from a human with great interests in spiders saving them. Either way of gaining their attributes, Araneae-Born are powerful warriors and agile hunters when they fully mature, capable of operating in a wide range of terrain but a fairly narrow climate. Their dominating presence on the battlefield is enough to intimidate the hardiest of warriors, and they’re no stranger to a violent bloodbath. An Araneae is the bane of unwary travelers and fledgling adventurers. Others are vain but flattering, making their names as diplomats or aristocrats. They are an ally’s greatest asset and an enemy’s worst nightmare. Araneae-Born are also incapable of passing their cure/blessing onto their children, meaning their children will always be human. Araneae-Born can however draw attention from the spider-goddess onto their children which in most cases they do, making their children much more likely to be turned.

Physical Description

Araneae-Born look purely human, with a few exceptions. Araneae-Born will usually have small fangs in their mouth where their canine teeth should be, an abundance of small hairs on their fingertips and feet with a few small hairs spread around their body (these hairs tend to not be noticeable), and two-four small eyes below their actual eyes. These small eyes can be as small as freckles or as big as the humans normal eyes. Aside from these small features, most Araneae-Born will also take on a physicality of the spider they had their fateful encounter with. As such, if a person had their encounter with a relatively cunning spider they might grow up looking frail and appear more inelegant, but if a person had their encounter with a commonly dangerous strong spider, they might grow up bigger than most other people and look very muscular. Another side effect of the spider-goddesses curse/blessing is a weird symbol of webs where the incident with the spider occurred, which can take any size or shape. For example if a person accidentally stepped on a spider nest killing all of its inhabitants, a spider web marking might appear solely on the bottom of their foot, or it could be much bigger traveling partway up their leg. Or if a person gave a hand to a spider and helped it move to safety, a web marking might appear on their arm, covering solely their finger or their entire arm. This marking is permanent, but is rumored to disappear if the        spider-goddess is slain.

Society

Due to their innate spider blessings/curses, most Araneae-Born are solitary by nature and prefer living on their own, whether on the fringes of the city or the depths of the wilderness. This however does not mean that they are not sociable, in fact most Most Araneae-Born prefer to live with other people, they just can't because they are seen with fear and disgust and have become accustomed to the hostility seen from strangers and travelers, developing a darker, more cynical world view. This does not mean that Araneae-Born can’t live normal lives. Most humans try to keep their secret just that, a secret, so if a person can successfully do that, they could live a normal life. Most Araneae-Born who successfully keep their powers a secret find honest lives as musician's or entertainers, due to their friendly trustworthy attitude.

Araneae-Born Names

Being born a human and having so much more variety than other cultures, Araneae-Born as a whole have no typical names. Some human parents give their children names from other languages, such as Dwarvish or Elvish (pronounced more or less correctly), but most parents give names that are linked to their region’s culture or to the naming traditions of their ancestors.

Fanged Bite

With your fangs, you have the ability to bite opponents. Your fangs are quite small so it will not work on heavily armored opponents, and does not do much damage (1d4+dexterity modifier). Your bite does however have a chance of inflicting poison. When an opponent is bitten the must make a DC 10 constitution+ your dexterity modifier saving throw. If the target fails this saving throw, they are poisoned for three rounds taking 1d4 poison damage each round that passes for a maximum of three rounds. Each round the creature is poisoned it has the option of making a bonus action to rid itself of the poison, in which it must make the same saving throw minus 1 for each two round that have passed (so if 2 rounds have passed, it would be a DC of 10 constitution+ your dexterity modifier minus 1 for a saving throw). While the damage from this bite does not level up, the damage from the poison and it's duration does. The bite portion of this attack can be used indefinitely, however the poisoning aspect can only be used 2 times per short rest. The poisoning refills after a long rest as well.
